Atomic absorption is the most sensitive technique available to analysts for the determination of metal impurities. Loba offers ready to use standard single-element solutions. These standard solutions are obtained by dissolution of the metal, at a purity level of 99.9%, in an acid. They are characterised by: concentration of the metal equal to 1000 ppm; guaranteed titer with a ± 0.002 unit tolerance; available in 100ml and 500ml bottles in polyethylene or glass depending on compatibility; certificate of analysis with references on the analytical method, the NIST Standard Reference Materials and the confidence interval; shelf life, for the unopened product package, of 3 years.
ICP is a widely used analytical technique for trace metal analysis. One of the latest technological advances in the area of coupled analytical techniques involves the optimisation of the ICP-MS technique, a versatile and vital instrument for the quick and reliable analysis of trace and ultra-trace metals.
Loba offers standard single-element solution for ICP. These standard solutions are obtained by dissolution of the metal, at a purity level of 99.99%, in an acid. They are characterised by: concentrations of 1000 ppm and 10000 ppm; guaranteed titer with a tolerance of 0.2% at the 95% confidence level; raw materials selected and verified against NIST Standard Reference Materials; available in 100ml and 500ml polyethylene bottles; certificate of analysis with references to tile analytical method, the NIST Standard Reference Materials and the confidence interval; shelf life, for the unopened product package, is 3 years.

Launch of New Benchtop Scientific Spectroscopic Ellipsometer
Horiba Scientific, a global leader with over 20 years of experience in phase modulation Ellipsometry technology, is pleased to announce the launch of the UVISEL 2, a new generation of scientific spectroscopic ellipsometers. The UVISEL 2 is a fully automated platform that provides a patented vision system, 8 computer selectable, achromatic spot sizes, and fast scanning, high-resolution monochromators, making it an unique solution for efficient and rapid thin film characterisation over a broad spectral range of 190-2100nm.
The UVISEL 2 is a highly automated instrument providing automatic goniometer, automatic XYZ stage, automatic sample adjustment and automatic microspot optics. Microspots, combined with a real-time vision system, allows straightforward and accurate spot positioning on a sample. A selection of eight achromatic spots (down to 35µm) allows the user to perform measurements on a broad spectral range even with a small spot size. This unique system always allows an image to be obtained, whether on rough, smooth, transparent or reflective surfaces.
A robust phase modulation control with the new electronics makes the UVISEL 2 the most sensitive and accurate spectroscopic ellipsometer on the market. It is capable of characterising advanced optical and material properties (e.g., anisotropy, gradient), detecting very thin layers (e.g., graphene) and can follow ultra fast kinetic phenomena at up to 1ms per point. The detection systems in VIS-FUV and NIR have also been enhanced to provide very low stray light and faster acquisition.
The powerful DeltaPsi2 software controls the UVISEL 2, offering the largest range of data acquisition and advanced modelling features. New automatic troubleshooting facilitates the diagnosis of problems. And our new automatic calibration procedure using integrated reference samples ensures easy calibration. The user interface is intuitive and customised to meet the requirements of both experienced scientists and newcomers.

Ocean Optics has named Christian F. Gainer of the University of Arizona as winner of the 2013 Ocean Optics Young Investigator Award. Gainer was honoured for his work with his advisor, Marek Romanowski, Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Arizona, presented in the paper ‘Multiphoton imaging of three-dimensional cancer models using upconverting lanthanide nanoparticles’. Their work describes the use of multiphoton scanning microscopy for three-dimensional modelling of colon and ovarian cancer.
Ocean Optics has sponsored the Young Investigator Award since 2008, part of a long tradition of supporting young scientists and educators from around the world. “We are energised and inspired by the efforts and discoveries of researchers early in their careers,” said Michael Allen, Ocean Optics Director, Marketing and Product Development. “Our support for these young men and women underscores our commitment to the vision of changing the world for the better through optical sensing.”

Increasing complexities of disease research, rising costs of drug discovery and development, and accelerating food contamination crises are among the factors driving the need for a wider range of laboratories worldwide to adopt high-speed, accurate mass-based technology. The TripleTOF 4600 system delivers unparalleled value for a variety of applications, including high-throughput discovery proteomics, food contaminant screening; and routine and comprehensive analysis of drug metabolites in early ADME. It complements the higher-end TripleTOF 5600 system, which was launched in 2010 and has been one of the most quickly and broadly adopted mass spectrometry systems across the world in recent years.
Collaboration Agreement to Maximise Capabilities of Highly Multiplexed Protein Assays
Agilent Technologies and Applied Proteomics have agreed to collaborate on highly multiplexed protein assays and workflow solutions for multiple reaction monitoring through mass spectrometry. Proteins perform many important cellular functions, are the targets of most drugs and therapies, and are often used as biomarkers for detecting and monitoring disease. Applied Proteomics will leverage Agilent 6490 Triple Quadrupole MS/MS, 1290 Infinity LC, RapidFire 360 MS system and Bravo liquid-handling technologies to optimise the throughput of highly multiplexed proteomic assays. Multiple reaction monitoring, a highly specific and sensitive mass- spectrometry technique, can detect and quantify analytes from plasma, serum and other biological samples. A multiplex assay can simultaneously measure multiple analytes, such as proteins, peptides, metabolites and lipids.
“The ability to quickly and accurately measure, monitor and analyse a large number of protein biomarkers in a single test has important applications for understanding human diseases and developing new clinical diagnostics,” said John E. Blume, PhD, Chief Science Officer of Applied Proteomics. “Agilent’s innovation in mass spectrometry is an important part of this collaboration as we work together to expand the capabilities of multiplex protein assays.”
Applied Proteomics specialises in a proteomics platform solution with mass spectrometry-based systems control and computational expertise to rapidly collect, process and analyse proteins. Proteomics is the study of the structure and function of proteins and how they interact within a complex biological system.

The TripleTOF 4600 system is designed as a highly reliable, workhorse instrument available at a value price, combining the world's fastest acquisition rates with intelligent acquisition strategies to maximise the benefits of UHPLC separations for high resolution accurate mass MS and MS/MS data. By maintaining the core capabilities of the TripleTOF 5600 system, with no compromise in speed, and using sophisticated application-specific software, the TripleTOF 4600 system now makes routine accurate mass quantitative and qualitative analysis available to virtually any laboratory.
To support the expansion of the TripleTOF family of next-generation instruments, AB Sciex has also made available the AB Sciex Accelerated Lab Integration packages, which conveniently combine the TripleTOF 4600 system with application-specific software, Eksigent ekspertTM UHPLC systems, reagents, training and service & support. The ALI packages for drug metabolism studies, food safety testing, lipid profiling, discovery proteomics, protein quantitation and biologics are designed to simplify the adoption of TripleTOF technology for laboratories that have never used LC/MS/MS or want to quickly and easily upgrade from older-generation technology.
