DITCH THE FADS AND FIND YOUR PURPOSE

Hands up, who’s confused with the health and fitness industry messaging?

I

’ve just resurfaced from an Instagram hole in the name of research feeling bemused. There’s keto, calorie deficit, HIIT, anti- diet culture, functional training, intermittent fasting, cold water therapy and more out there. I propose we cut through all the hashtags and focus on some simple information that can help us improve our health.

Before you worry about which diet to pick ask yourself; are you sleeping well, managing stress, seeking regular social connection, staying nourished and hydrated and moving regularly? It is unlikely in the world that we live in that you can say yes to all. You’re not unhealthy if you don’t meet all the above, but it is these elements that you should be scrutinising first and foremost.

Let’s look at health as bigger than fitness or diet. The finer details are confusing and contradictory so return to the basics, and refine from there. The human body (mind included) is exceptional and caring for it is a sign of self-respect. You are more than a diet, a number on the scale or the barbell weight. Seek a purpose beyond fitness or food. What will you remember when you’re 80? The calorie counting to fit into that dress and the photos on Facebook? Or the memories of time spent with people you care for?

‘You are more than a diet, a number on the scale or the barbell weight’.

Health comes in all shapes and sizes but you do need to get the fundamentals right. So, get enough sleep (7-9 hours a night), eat lots of vegetables, drink plenty of water, manage stress, move regularly and connect in real-life. I think if the majority of us did these things consistently there would be no need for fads anyway. Problem solved.
