THE ROLE OF THE BEHAVIOURIST
By Paul James Marshal l COTTAGE CANINES
Today’s pace of life and our busy streets and parks often bring a whole set of problems for dogs. This can be especially true of those dogs that have been through the rescue process
from abroad, many of whom arrive very anxious about the world. However, even dogs that have been brought up from puppies can become sensitive about their surroundings and interactions, often leading towards behavioural problems ranging from reactivity to separation anxiety to misbehaving at home or on walks.
Behavioural consultations usually start with a home visit where Paul can assess your dog in a calm environment and where you can ask questions and talk through any issues you may be having. Paul is very experienced in canine behaviour, both through his qualifications and his years working both as part of Canine Behaviour practices on the mainland and as a practitioner himself.
Following assessment, during which Paul talks you through the issues one by one, he then writes a comprehensive report with a behaviour modification plan for you to follow. This you receive within 48 hours. Follow-up sessions in Paul’s private field areas ensure that the plan can be carried out stage by stage, often involving Paul’s own dogs.
Paul is a reward-based behaviourist who uses positive methods to achieve results.
AUTUMN JOY
By Sharon and David Groves PETS WITH HART
What’s not to like in the autumn? Stunning sunrises and sunsets, misty mornings, crops being harvested, young birds finding their wings, new puppies, new kittens and, in our household, piglets growing very rapidly that Poppy loves to either play with or cuddle up with!
Yes, autumn in some ways is my favourite season. Having checked with the local farmer that it’s alright, walking some recently harvested fields is always a bonus, you just have to remember to pick up after your dog all the time. Harvest mites can be a problem too, and stubble can be very prickly to some of the more sensitive dogs as well.
Don’t forget though, the mornings are getting darker and the evenings are already starting to draw in, so you will need to find hi-vis gear to pop on your dogs. There is a huge variety of great hi-visibility collars, harnesses, leads and coats available from all your local pet shops and most will be more than happy to help with fitting.....we love to fit harnesses and give cuddles and treats out at Pets With
Hart....it’s a great bonus of our life! A quick reminder too, to make sure your dog’s microchip is up to date if you have recently moved.
One of the downsides of autumn, though, is that the dreaded firework season is about to get even louder than it has already been this summer. You can get lots of different things that can help if your pet is upset by fireworks: Pet Remedy, Adaptil, Feliway, Serene Um and Stay Calm are just a few that most pet shops will have available as well as Thunder coats and other coats such as the great Ruff and Tumbles, that do several jobs, can help.
You can also make sure they have a safe, snug area to go to, draw the curtains early and have the volume up a bit higher on either the radio or television. Plus of course walk your dog earlier and make sure your cat has come back in.
