A sociable couple who love a busy home, Bonnie and Tommy regularly invite friends over for big gatherings, including an annual summer camp in the garden.

“We’ll pre-order lots of food from Ada Mezze down on Carisbrooke High Street and enjoy socialising with friends over good food and drinks. We also take the group over to Compton Bay to enjoy the Isle of Wight summer. People think the Island is so seasonal, but it’s really not. We love it here in the winter too.”

gifts, including a Polish apple pie which was baked for us by one of our neighbours,” says Bonnie.

The garden also welcomed visitors during the recent Carisbrooke Open Garden event. A total of 240 people went along, raising money for the local parish fund.

While the house makes the perfect home for the Thomson family, a charity event led the couple to make it their business too. With the intention of raising money for three women’s cancer charities, Bonnie was asked to open her home up for a one-off yoga and wellbeing retreat.

“Lots of companies and services gave up their time for free to help us put on this great weekend for charity. Unexpectedly, the event was such a

hit that everybody that came to stay wanted to come again. They told their friends about it and soon the idea turned into a business venture.”

Weekend wellbeing retreats are now available to book under the company name ‘English Island’ and offer delicious food cooked by the in-house chef, a champagne reception, yoga, tarot and gong bath. In the winter, enjoy the cosy log fire and scented candles, or tuck into English Island’s signature lemon balm gin and tonics in the garden in the summer. Guests can book a bespoke retreat for a group of up to nine friends, or go along as an individual.

“One thing we love about relocating to the Island is the variety of untouched historical properties for sale here — it’s magical. We absolutely fell in love with this place.”
