WEBS, WAVES AND STARS
F 42
rom our high-quality night skies, newly designated marine conservation zones and UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status, the Isle of Wight is recognised as having a significant and rich
biodiversity. This has inspired Quay Arts’ 2019 exhibition programme and we are delighted to expand on these themes, throwing the net wider to present work by acclaimed Latvian-American artist Vija Celmins.
Best-known for creating photo-realistic monochrome drawings and prints of natural environments and phenomena, ARTIST ROOMS: Vija Celmins focusses on meticulously crafted prints of terrestrial and extra-terrestrial habitats; from intricate spider webs and ocean surfaces to vast night skies and deep space.
These skilfully rendered and subtle artworks remind us of the complexity of the world around us, inviting us to contemplate our surroundings.
The exhibition at Quay Arts draws from the ARTIST ROOMS collection of over 1,600
works of modern and contemporary art by 42 major international artists. The programme also gives young people the chance to get involved in creative projects, discover more about art and artists, and learn new skills.
Young Islanders aged 15-19 have created a show of their own with artist Caroline Underwood, responding to the work of Celmins. Vija Celmins: Reflections draws inspiration from the Lukely Brook and River Medina, in Newport.
ARTIST ROOMS is jointly owned by the National Galleries of Scotland and Tate. The collection was established through The d’Offay Donation in 2008, with the assistance of the National Heritage Memorial Fund, Art Fund and the Scottish and British Governments.
