Name: Russell Martin

Company: Finance 4 Business

Job Title: Founder and managing director

What does your company do? Finance 4 Business is a specialist property finance brokerage. We offer a bespoke, tailored solution to our clients and are served by hundreds of lenders.

How did it all start? The need to earn money and fast. I was down to my last £20, with a young family to feed. I wrote a seven-page business plan, converted my garage to an office, designed and built my website and started trading inside a week.

What’s your greatest achievement so far? Attracting the very best people in the market to work with me. I feel blessed on a daily basis to see all the people in the office with skill sets better than mine. The real winner is our clients.

What is the biggest risk you’ve ever taken – and did it work out? Moving into grade A offices in the heart of Birmingham’s finance district and launching four new businesses on the same day. Whilst it certainly hasn’t been as smooth a transition as I had hoped, two years on I am delighted that all companies are trading profitably.

If you could turn the clock back, what would you do differently? I would like to spend more time with my family, but time constraints are inevitable when you are passionate about establishing and growing businesses.

What has surprised you most in your job? Money. We arrange all sorts of diverse debt facilities on a daily basis and yet the mechanics of

money continues to surprise me on a regular basis.

What advice would you give to someone starting out? Find a business you are good at and enjoy. Stick to what you know and the results will follow. If you diversify too soon you are likely to experience difficulties. Once you are recognised as the best in your field, then seek to introduce complementary services.

Which business do you most admire? Too many to detail. I generally admire private companies that grow and evolve through a genuine passion to deliver an excellent client experience.

What exciting projects is your business working on? I am introducing a ‘Private Clients’ department packed with finance experience to service larger financial transactions. Finance 4 Business also features in the Parliamentary Review from this month, so I will be spending some time in Westminster which will be a new experience.

What made you join Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce and how are you making use of your membership? We are very proud to be members of the Chamber and it gives us a platform for businesses to work together, be cohesive and put the region at the heart of all they do. We make use of the numerous events the Chamber offers, both from a networking opportunity and for developing knowledge.
