and any health and safety regulations regarding dress; it might be Christmas, but staff still need to dress appropriately for the job they’re doing.
Gift giving It’s always nice to receive gifts from customers and clients, and you may be thinking about showing your gratitude to your staff with a token of appreciation and encouraging them to buy gifts for others. With this in mind, it’s important that all staff are clear on what constitutes an appropriate gift. If your staff receive gifts from their customers, it is a
good idea to ensure they inform you if they receive a large or more expensive gift, especially when the intention of the gift could be viewed as questionable. With this in mind, it’s also wise to remind your staff of your bribery policy – and if you haven’t got a policy in place yet, now is the time to draft one! If your workplace is playing ‘Secret Santa’, make sure
there is an upper spend limit in place, and consider prohibiting inappropriate/rude gifts – it is not acceptable for any of your staff to be made to feel uncomfortable, even if the gift is intended as a joke. If you do intend on buying gifts for your staff, don’t
make them feel as though they need to buy you a gift in return.
Religion Modern workplaces are made up of people of different races and religions, and it is important to keep this in mind over the festive period. Make sure non-Christian staff are invited to any
celebrations or parties you may be planning; these types of events are not just about celebrating the holidays, but are a way to thank your staff for a year of hard work and socialise together as a team. Keep in mind the requirements of staff from other faiths;
consider the provision of alcohol and dietary requirements, make sure the date doesn’t clash with any other religious holidays and check the suitability of the venue, entertainment and the theme. Additionally, make sure staff are aware that such events are not mandatory, allowing any non-Christian or non-religious staff to opt out if they so choose. If you do decide to decorate the workplace (health
and safety considerations notwithstanding) it is sensible to avoid religious imagery, and if you plan on sending out Christmas cards/emails/messages etc. to your clients and supplies, it is prudent to opt for seasonal themes, rather than religious ones.
