In Brief
Burton-based Else Solicitors teamed up with ADS Accountancy Limited and marketing consultant Harriet Coppock to raise £2,000 for a local charity after undertaking a ‘Three Peaks’ challenge. The ‘Three Peaks’ are Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike
and Snowdon, and the challenge involved driving 462 miles between the trio of locations, and a further 23 miles scaling them. The beneficiary of this is Burton-based Star
Foundation, which works with local schools and clubs to purchase sports, art and music equipment improving the lives of youngsters within the Burton community.
Burton Upon Trent & District YMCA, a charity which works with homeless people and those at risk of homelessness, has been named as a 2019 ‘Weston Charity Awards’ winner. For this, the charity will receive a grant of
£6,500 from the Garfield Weston Foundation and a year’s strategic planning support from a team of four business leaders to enable it to become more efficient, effective and sustainable. Established in 1958, the family run Garfield
Weston Foundation supports causes across the UK with grants totalling some £70m annually. It has donated more than £1bn to charities since it was established.
Staffordshire County Council is carrying out various road improvements in Burton, at Borough Road, near the railway station and on Shobnall Road and Forest Road. The £350,000 scheme on Borough Road,
due to finish at the of this month, includes widening the road to create bus lay-bys, new bus shelters, relocating an existing zebra crossing and resurfacing the road and pavements. The £650,000 improvement scheme at
Shobnall Road will see the entire road resurfaced, a process which began last month and is expected to take a month to complete.

Willshee’s helps health food chain reduce waste
Health food chain Holland & Barrett has reduced its landfill to nothing after linking up with Burton-based Willshee’s Waste & Recycling. Nuneaton headquartered Holland & Barrett has
more than 1,300 shops in 16 countries, as far afield as Hong Kong. In the UK the firm has more than 850 outlets,
and managing the disposal of waste is a major task. However, it has an environmental health and safety (EHS) team, led by Simon Birtles, whose
job it is to deal with waste. This is processed centrally at its Burton

distribution centre and before linking up with Willshee’s around a quarter of the waste material would have ended up in landfill.
However, the company’s procedures have now
been revamped, and the result is that nothing is now sent to landfill. Each day, stock is delivered to the company’s
stores, and at the same time all their waste is collected and brought back to the Burton distribution centre for processing. The waste is segregated and then transported
to Willshee’s recycling facility, where it is sorted and processed. The Holland & Barrett side of things is
managed by Mark Cosfored, who said: “Not only are we now achieving zero waste to landfill, but we are far more environmentally friendly than we used to be.”
