Sutton Coldfield Chamber president Katie Hale adds another business to the EcoPledge
Businesses show support for Chamber’s EcoPledge
Businesses from across the Greater Birmingham region have been demonstrating their support for the Sutton Coldfield Chamber of Commerce’s EcoPledge. EcoPledge – the brainchild of Chamber
president Katie Hale – encourages firms to make one small change to their operation in order to make a big difference to the environment and their bottom line. PLOTT Creative has pledged to only use
carbon balanced-paper and will be encouraging clients to use a rubberised paper finish on print products, rather than standard plastic lamination. The Sutton Coldfield Community Games has
banned single-use plastic from its events, while Sutton Coldfield Town Hall has pledged to eradicate single-use plastic cups from its bar by
the end of 2019. The Chamber’s chosen charity, YMCA Sutton Coldfield, has vowed to sustain and maximise its edible garden. And accountancy firm Smith Cooper has set
the ambitious target of making its Birmingham office paper-free. Pledges have also been received from the
British Heart Foundation, Power Minerals, PLANitGlobal, Natwest and ARK Media, while Suez, International Synergies and Curry Design Studios are supporting the initiative. Katie Hale said: “It’s really encouraging to see
so many businesses embracing the concept of EcoPledge. “Some of the pledges may not seem like huge changes but they are achievable and together can make a big difference.”
Ash supplier still has power
A Sutton Coldfield company that supplies millions of tons of ash to industry says it’s ‘business as usual’ despite the planned closure of one its coal-fired power station partners. Power Minerals supplies ash for use in cement, ground stabilisation, roads, construction and
infrastructure projects, identifying sustainable uses for the by-products of coal-fired power generation. The firm has agreements with many of the country’s coal-fired power stations including
Fiddlers Ferry in Cheshire, which is set to close. But Power Minerals managing director Nigel Waldron says supply of ash from Fiddlers Ferry
will not be interrupted– thanks to huge stockpiles that have built up at the site. Mr Waldron, who is honorary chair of the Sutton Coldfield Chamber, said: “Power station ash is
a very useful and flexible by-product that provides a sustainable ingredient for all kinds of industrial processes and we have millions of tonnes of it in stockpiles across the UK and around the world, which will last for generations. “The ash created by Fiddlers Ferry over the years will continue to find a sustainable use.”
Sutton Coldfield town centre masterplan confirmed
By councillor Simon Ward, leader, Royal Sutton Coldfield Town Council
The Royal Sutton Coldfield Town Centre Regeneration Partnership (TCRP) hailed £150,000 funding for phase one of a masterplan as the dawn of a new future for the town centre. The town centre masterplan will provide an
inspirational vision for a thriving town centre. The masterplan is part of a wider support agenda including a proposed £1.5m Heritage Action Zone project around Vesey Gardens and shorter-term projects to use vacant units for community purposes. Councillor Simon Ward, TCRP chair and
leader of Royal Sutton Coldfield Town Council, said: “we are delighted that funding has been confirmed for this vital project to guide the reinvention of our town centre. As well as the Town Council’s contribution, my thanks go to Greater Birmingham and Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership and Sutton Coldfield BID for providing funding to get this project moving. We are excited to get started, engage with the residents and businesses and deliver an ambitious, achievable masterplan for the town centre. The challenges faced by retailers are well documented – we must reshape our town centre and the work starts now.” Partners from the TCRP, Chaired by Royal
Sutton Coldfield Town Council, cover local stakeholders including Birmingham City Council, Sutton Coldfield BID, FOLIO Sutton Coldfield and Greater Birmingham Chamber of Commerce. Regional members include Greater Birmingham and Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership, the West Midlands Combined Authority, Transport for West Midlands and major landowners.
