United Airlines recognised for diversity efforts

United Airlines has been recognised for its efforts for developing a diverse workplace. The airline received top marks

from America’s annual Disability Equality Index (DEI), for the fourth year running. United’s various diversity

initiatives are aimed at building a more inclusive workplace. The airline says it is committed

to engaging with diverse groups, including the ‘LGBT community, people of colour, women, veterans and people with disabilities’. United also works with partner

organisations to engage people from all backgrounds to build a more diverse aviation industry. Lori Bradley, senior vice

president of global talent management at United Airlines, asid: “United’s leadership in advancing disability inclusion practices is about doing what's right and doing what's good for our employees, customers and business. “We are proud of this distinction

and will continue working to champion these initiatives to ensure we continue to earn a perfect score every year in the future.”

Business leaders plan to keep HS2 on track

Business leaders in Greater Birmingham have vowed to ‘make a better case than ever before’ for HS2 after holding talks with Douglas Oakervee, who is leading a review into the project. Less than 24 hours after the review into the high-

speed rail scheme was announced, Mr Oakervee visited Birmingham to meet a range of stakeholders from the East and Midlands. Talks were held at Birmingham City University's Curzon Building - a stone’s throw from the site of the proposed Curzon Street HS2 station. Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce was

instrumental in bringing the stakeholders together and chief executive Paul Faulkner said: “It’s great that Mr Oakervee’s first visit was to Birmingham to hear from a whole range of stakeholders as to why HS2 is so important - not just for Birmingham and the West Midlands but the whole country. “The review is here so we've got to see it as an opportunity not just to restate the case for HS2 but to make the case in a better way than ever before.”

Children’s hospice gets huge fundraising boost

A staggering £100k donation from a former member of staff has given a huge boost to a fundraising appeal launched by Acorns Children’s Hospice. Erica Brown - who worked for the charity until 2009 - donated the

massive sum to the ‘Save Acorns Black Country Hospice Appeal’, which is trying to raise £2m to save Acorns hospice in Walsall. The generous donor, 69, who lives in Droitwich, said she was able to

pledge such a sum thanks to an inheritance from her mother. She said: “Having worked for Acorns I know the support the charity gives

to children and families across the region is an absolute and utter lifeline to all of them. Acorns not only enables children to have a ‘good death’ at the end of their life, but is able to continue supporting families - including parents, siblings and grandparents - who are all grappling with some of the most challenging and difficult things that anybody can imagine.” After working as a primary school teacher, Erica became a bereaved

parent following the loss of twins Jonathan and Juliet in 1973. She joined Acorns as head of research in 1999.

commitment of significant new NHS funding from Black Country healthcare commissioners. The appeal is aiming to raise £2m to keep the Walsall hospice – which the charity had earmarked for closure – open until the new Government funding is received.

‘HS2 joins the country up and it would be absolutely devastating if it weren't to go ahead’

Representatives from the West Midlands Combined

Authority, Birmingham City, Solihull Borough and Nottinghamshire County Councils, East Midlands Chamber of Commerce and transport body Midlands Connect were among those in attendance. Julian Beer, deputy vice-chancellor at Birmingham

City University and president of the Transatlantic Chamber of Commerce, was also present and said: “I think what the review saw today was our absolute determination and confidence to speak with one voice about how important this project is. “HS2 joins the country up and it would be

absolutely devastating if it weren't to go ahead.” Following the meeting, Mr Oakervee was greeted

by ITV reporters and said he had gained “very positive” impressions from the discussion.
