Develop skills in a governor role

Volunteering on a school governing board can provide powerful professional development opportunities, according to new research. Governors for Schools,

Uni hotel will be eco friendly

The University of Birmingham’s Edgbaston Park Hotel has committed to eliminating all single-use plastics by 31 May 2023. Inspired by the Meetings Industry Association’s (MIA)

Plastic Pledge, Edgbaston Park Hotel and Conference Centre (pictured) has joined the MIA’s #20PercentLess campaign. The pledge commits businesses to cutting single-use plastics by 20 per cent each year until 2025, to reduce the impact of the business meetings and events industry on the environment. However, Edgbaston Park Hotel has chosen to fast-

track their pledge.General manager Richard Metcalfe said: “When we say we’re doing something, we really mean it. We don’t want to wait until 2025 to make this happen – so we’ve made 2023 our target. “We’re already enacting lots of sustainable

initiatives across the hotel, from providing recycling facilities and avoiding single-serve products to using ethical and local suppliers in the restaurant.

“Now we’re really focusing on new ways we can

improve, whether that’s rethinking bathroom toiletries or the way we put together our breakfast-to-go offer for guests who need an early start. Small changes make a big difference. It’s what guests are looking for – and it matters to us as a team too.” Edgbaston Park Hotel and Conference Centre is

part of the University of Birmingham Group and the Preferred Hotels group. Opened in 2018, it provides 185 bedrooms, and

flexible meeting spaces, conference facilities and events venues for up to 250. It features two historic restored buildings, Hornton Grange and Garth House, and is set in a leafy conservation park on the Edgbaston campus.

supported by the Bank of England, Allen and Overy, and PwC, found that school governors gained skills in leading and influencing others, strategic planning, and developing professional relationships. The national engagement charity

contacted more than 100 governors as part of the research, and is now calling for school governance to be seen as a key element of talent development programmes for those preparing for senior management position. The research shows that the

skills developed through being a school governor provide an excellent grounding for employees as they progress through changes in their working lives. Louise Cooper, chief executive of

Governors for Schools, said: “The way we work is continually evolving, and in order to thrive in their roles, people must be able to adapt.”
