Year 8 (continued) SONG WRITING
This year, our song writing group entered the Wiltshire Music Connect song writing competition again. The theme this year was anything at all to do with ‘Wiltshire’ and we wrote a song that we are really proud of called ‘The White Horse’.
We created this song through many stages. We thought about all our local landmarks and decided on the White Horse because it is iconic to us and to the people of Westbury. To start off with, we made a mind map about what actually makes the White Horse so iconic. We say in our song ‘You can see it from all around, from every point on the ground’ which is very true and was one of the ideas that we came up with in our mind map.
NETBALL
It has been great to see so many new faces at year 8 netball club this year, as well as a lot of familiar faces! The girls have all shown an excellent commitment to training, consistently developing their skills and techniques as well as coming together as a great netball team.
Year 8’s faced their first match against St Laurence on 28th January. Despite some initial nerves the girls played brilliantly and came away with a win 11-2. Throughout the game Lily Morris and Courtneigh Meadows defended excellently, allowing only 2 goals to be scored!
A month later the girls faced both Melksham Oak & Kingdown. The girls scored a good win against Kingdown however they suffered a narrow loss to Melksham Oak.
The girls did not let this get them down! They returned to training and we keen to develop some areas of their playing which needed improving, ready for their next match.
Once we had all of these ideas, we started to work on the lyrics to the actual song. We pieced the initial ideas from the mind map together in a way that made them rhyme. For the chorus, we came up with the idea for the “White Horse” line that goes at the same time, harmonising with the main chorus lyrics.
At first we had one verse and a chorus and we decided to make it 2 verses and a chorus because it made the chorus stand out more and seem more special because the listener had to wait longer for it. For the second and third verses everyone shared a memory and this helped us with ideas for those.
Finally, off the back of our feedback from last year’s competition, our teacher suggested we put in a middle 8 section which was different from the verses / choruses. We thought about how the White Horse looks in the different seasons and used that to write the Middle 8. We decided to make it acapella because it makes the final chorus stand out even more.
The song feels like it is country in style which reflects where we live because it is rural. We used the guitar to accompany the song because Amy is a guitar player. We are really happy with the song and hope that you like it too.

On the 13th March the girls travelled to St Augustines to play in the Year 8 netball tournament. There were 8 other schools in their pool including Stonar, St Augustines A, Clarendon & Kingdown A. The girls began the tournament very strongly, winning their first 3 games and playing well together as a team. Ruby Ladd made a fantastic goal keeper throughout the tournament and Grace O’Connor enjoyed a high success rate with her shooting, working very well with Lilly Dimambro as a goal shooter. A late addition to the team, Rachel Clinch, was a fantastic wing defence, consistently making clean interceptions, allow us some great turnovers. Despite some very tired legs by the middle of the tournament, the girls persevered and showed great resilience. Unfortunately, this was not enough and the girls suffered 2 losses in the middle of the tournament. Despite this, they came back fighting either drawing or winning their last couple of matches. Overall the girls finished in 5th position – a great achievement against some tough teams.
I have really enjoyed coaching the year 8 team this year, it has been fantastic to watch them develop and improve as players, having a lot of fun along the way! I hope to see you all again next season.
