Year 10 (continued) IT’S ALL ABOUT NEA 2
Having spent the majority of terms 1 and 2 working on their science investigations year 10 have changed their focus to one where they have been developing their high level practical skills. To help them achieve this they have undertaken a mock version of their NEA 2 just to find out what is involved. The NEA that they were given was to focus on Mediterranean cuisine, We spent the first lesson looking at countries within the Mediterean, this proved to be extremely useful as one of the comments raised by the students was –“France isn’t a country in the Mediterranean Miss”. Having overcome this issue most of the students chose to focus their attention on Italy, although there was one very brave sole who chose to study Greece. The students then went on to make a range of dishes that could be adapted into something else, examples include risotto being made into arancini balls, pizza turning into calzone, tagliatelle into ravioli and biscotti being used as the base for an Italian cheesecake. The quality of the practical outcomes has been very high and has demonstrated some complex practical skills including bread dough, pasta dough and a gelatine set panna cotta. Once completed the students went onto analyse the cost and nutritional values of their dishes and suggested improvements that could be made to their dishes. The feedback from the tasters suggested that the dishes not only looked great but also tasted very good as well.
