SIXTH FORM

Terms 3 and 4 are the time when life for the average Sixth Former starts getting more serious as the important exams of the summer start to feel all too real. To support our students, there have been mock exams for both year groups, a parents’ evening and a Mock Conference for the Year 13s. All these aspects of our work are designed to help us track student progress and to diagnose any issues which need resolving and to communicate these with the student and those people who are in the best positions to help them, whether that be teachers or parents.

We have put a number of supportive measures in place to help different students, including one-to-one mentoring sessions with a team of volunteers which includes some of the school’s governors, as well as former students who have generously given of their time for this project. Many students are receiving extra lessons both on a subject-level and in various general study skills, such as academic writing and revision techniques.

Extra support is all very well, but ultimately, it is the students who have to put the work in so as to achieve the best results they can. We have just received some very positive results from a raft of BTEC exams which were sat after Christmas, with the vast majority of students demonstrating they can achieve great results at this level. However, for many students the coming few weeks will be a very challenging time as so much is at stake: prized university places, apprenticeships and future careers. We want our students to feel the pressure, but to be strong enough to cope well with it. To this end, the Sixth Form team has been joined by Miss Bowler who will be a valuable addition to our pastoral support. She has already got to know many of the students and is able to give additional support to many of them, including helping them to manage their workload, organise their time and to remain positive.

Sixth Formers continue to remain active in all aspects of school life, some of which you will be able to read of elsewhere in this edition of the school newsletter. From supporting in lessons across the school, to doing work experience behind the scenes in the school, Sixth Formers are making a positive contribution to their community. They are helping to run the Leadership

programme aimed at younger students and to develop their own leadership skills in the process; supporting in the Reprographics Office; helping younger students as Reading Buddies and performing in various events.

All the while, many Year 13s have dedicated a lot of time to securing well-deserved university places while Year 12 are starting the process of thinking carefully about their future plans. All Year 12s are asked to complete a week of work experience in July. If you are able to offer a work experience placement, or know of someone else who might, please contact me at the school.

Finally, we have nearly completed the recruitment process for next year’s new intake into the Sixth Form. Large numbers of applications have been received from both the Year 11s at Matravers, and from students in other schools. We interview all applicants, so if there are any other students who are thinking of applying to the Sixth Form we would be very happy to meet with them. Further details and application forms are available on the school website.
