WESTBURY LIONS SCHOOLS CONCERT

2019 All Every year the Westbury Lions sponsor a concert for all schools in Westbury to come together and perform music based around a common theme. The event is always an uplifting one and this year’s concert which took place in the Matravers Theatre on Thursday 14th March was no exception.

Seven of the Westbury schools took part. Each school prepared a song on the theme of ‘I Can’ which hopefully will have inspired the children that they can do or be anything they choose. Songs performed on the night included ‘Diamonds’ by Westbury Infant school, ‘Titanium’ by Bitham Brook primary school and ‘A Million Dreams’ by Dilton Marsh C of E primary school. Other highlights of the evening were a duet by sisters Florrie and Faith Leitch, students at Westbury Leigh C of E primary school and Matravers school respectively, who performed a song that they had written themselves called ‘Overcoming Hurdles’. Another original song was performed by the Matravers choir, who sang ‘The White Horse’, a song written and composed by Year 8 students at the school about our own Westbury White Horse. Another special moment was when 25 violinists took to the stage to perform together. The children were from Key Stages 2 & 3 across five of the participating schools, brought together by violin teacher Fern Joyce. Bringing the string players together as one large ensemble will hopefully become a tradition over the coming years.

The audience of 200 family, friends and community members were smiling throughout the concert and. It was indeed a heart-warming, inspiring evening.

At the end of the concert, Michelle Strout, the Vice President of the Westbury Lions and her daughter Phoebe Strout, president of the youth branch, Westbury Leos, presented each of the participating schools a charitable donation to further support endeavours at their school.
