space technology development. We enjoyed lectures summarising the current understanding of the particle physics model and how it relates to the big bang and gravity. We found out how particle accelerators work and then enjoyed a tour of the ISIS muon and neutron source – where a beam of protons is accelerated to

students had to plan and deliver a task for 10 to 15 minutes, this meant communicating effectively and working as a group to make the session as enjoyable as possible for the students that attended. The sports Leaders were:

the almost the speed of light then fired at targets to produce other particles which can then be used to study materials as diverse as aeroplane electronics, plants and archaeological treasures. After lunch it was time for a computer workshop where we used software to analyse real data from the large hadron collider at CERN to identify particles and search for the elusive Higgs Boson. A scientist from CERN gave a lecture describing what it is like to work in the international particle physics community and we finished the day with a fun quiz and, of course, goody bags. All in all, the day was a fantastic insight into the incredible technology, diversity and collaboration that goes on every day in the world of scientific research.

YEAR 7 FOOTBALL

All year groups have fielded competitive football teams this season. Year 7 have used over 20 players this season, fielding an A and B teams in the West Wilts league, as well as playing a friendly tournament with teams from Stonar. The highlight of the season has been reaching the Quarter Final of the Wiltshire County Cup, losing out to Sheldon School. WESTBURY LEO’S CLUB

The Leo’s have worked tirelessly over the last 18 months in the Quakers’ graveyard restoration project. Phoebe Strout, President of the Westbury Leos’s, gave a speech to Westbury Town Council and received some funding to support the project’s completion. The project has been overseen by archaeologist Julian Richard. Through this project, the grave of William Matravers was discovered, who upon

his death bequeathed £1,000 to fund a school for the children of Westbury, Matravers school.

We are immensely proud of the students involved in this project.
