Name: David Thomson
Company: Prescient Business Consulting Ltd
Job Title: Partner – Strategy & Leadership
LM is helping to deliver part of HS2 – the UK’s new high speed railway.
What does your company do? We work with businesses who want to change and increase their value. We do this by looking at strategy, people and operational excellence, particularly sales and supply chain.
How did it all start? I started the business in January, 2018, with two colleagues, Jonathan Watt and Kate Marsh. Between us, we cover a very wide spectrum of disciplines and know we can make a really positive difference to businesses in the region.
What’s your greatest achievement so far? Getting the business up and running so quickly. We secured our first clients very quickly, meaning we could move into our new Brindleyplace office ahead of schedule.
What is the biggest risk you’ve ever taken – and did it work out? 15 years ago I left my safe position as MD in a conglomerate to buy a business in my own right. It was a massive learning experience!
What keeps you awake at night? Having ideas and then worrying that I’ll forget them by morning!
If you could turn the clock back, what would you do differently? I would have started my business sooner. I had the idea years ago, but the time never felt right. If you have dream, follow it!
What has surprised you most in your job? The positive atmosphere and level of energy in the Greater Birmingham business community.
What advice would you give to someone starting out? Have faith in your own ability and never lose sight of what you set out to do.
Which business do you most admire? In the Birmingham area I’ve always been impressed with Mills & Reeve. They combine professionalism, ambition and a sense of enjoyment in what they do.
What exciting projects is your business working on? We’re working with an international tech company. A lot of work, with all three of us travelling frequently to the US, Poland and Lebanon.
What made you join Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce and how are you making use of your membership? I knew the Chamber was a great business network, but have been surprised just how much support they’ve given us. I’m incredibly grateful to the Chamber for their help in getting Prescient off the ground, even renting us our first office.
