£100m plan for campus at Wolverhampton University
Work is set to start shortly on a flagship facility at the University of Wolverhampton’s £100m Springfield Campus. The university’s new School of Architecture and the
Built Environment will rise from the ground around the current building’s original clock and tower, both of which will be restored. The new 7,900 sq m building will have three floors
and will feature a ‘saw-tooth’ roof, designed to echo the historic industrial buildings that once stood on the site. The building will include specialist teaching and social learning spaces, design studios, specialist labs, multi-disciplinary workshops, lecture theatre, café, offices, meeting rooms, ICT rooms and a top floor studio with double height ceilings.
‘Our vision is for Springfield Campus to be the place people associate with architecture’
When completed, it will provide space for nearly
1,100 existing students and 65 staff, with the number of students projected to grow over time to 1,600. Deputy vice-chancellor Jackie Dunne, the
university’s project lead for Springfield, said: “The School of Architecture and Built Environment is the flagship build of the first phase of the redevelopment of Springfield. “We’re really excited about this project. It will be a
stunning addition to the university’s estate and provide first-class state-of-the-art facilities for students studying with us in these disciplines.” The plans for the School of Architecture form the
largest part of the first phase of the £100m redevelopment of the site to create the Springfield Campus. The aim is that it will be delivered by Summer 2020. The new building has been designed by Associated Architects and built by construction firm ISG.

Sciences Park in search for partner
GVA has been appointed by the University of Birmingham to find a development and funding partner for the £300m Birmingham Life Sciences Park. Situated on a remediated 9.9-
acre site in Selly Oak, outline planning consent is already in place with the potential to accommodate over 580,000 sq ft (54,000 sq m) of state-of-the-art facilities. GVA will advise the university
throughout the process and will assess prospective partners or consortia on their relevant experience and capability within the medical and life sciences sectors to bring forward the development. Combining technology innovation
platforms and high quality commercial accommodation, the Birmingham Life Sciences Park will act as a pioneering and globally significant location, bringing together researchers, clinicians, policy makers and industry to translate scientific and clinical insights into patient benefit and economic growth. Flagship facility: How the new building will look New Birmingham homes on sale
Two newcomers to the Birmingham housing market, Galliard Homes and Apsley House Capital, are releasing their first new homes for sale. Apartments at the joint venture
partners’ The Timber Yard scheme in Birmingham’s Southside district have gone on sale, priced from £199,000. The development, on Pershore
Street, comprises 379 studio, one, two and three bedroom apartments. The development gets its name
from the history of the area, which was known for its timber and scrap metal yards, and plywood and aluminium works.
The Timber Yard has been designed around a central landscaped garden, bordered by two residential buildings, seven and 13 storeys high respectively, which provide views across Birmingham’s skyline. The Timber Yard is the first
large-scale residential scheme for private sale to be launched in the Southside district for 10 years. Mark Evans, Knight Frank’s head
of regional residential development, said: “Birmingham is developing into a city with an international presence, we now see buyers from across the world investing in the city for all that it has to offer.
Birmingham welcomed over 7,500 people migrating from London last year, more than any other city in the UK. “As the city’s renaissance
continues at speed, we anticipate this flight out of the capital to continue as people search for greater value residential investments. Apsley director Robin Norstrom
said: “Although we have been working in Birmingham for more than a year, launching our first site to the market is a real milestone for the joint venture partnership. “We now have a committed
pipeline of 2,800 homes planned for Birmingham.”
medical and learning facilities – including the University of Birmingham campus, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham Women’s Hospital and the Institute of Translational Medicine – will create opportunities for businesses to harness the power of the city’s unrivalled health and translational research infrastructure. GVA’s Carl Potter, who is leading
the process, said: “This is a very specific and interesting project for the right partner who wants to enter into a long term relationship with the university. “There are a growing number of
developers and funders who are seeking opportunities such as this which enables development to fulfil a clear long term vision and purpose. “The site is uniquely positioned
to take advantage of the innovation which is already underway within this sector and which requires a real estate solution to continue its growth.”
