Firm sets record with jumbo printed sculpture

A Sutton Coldfield firm has set a world record with a 3D printed sculpture. Andesign has made the world’s biggest 3D

printed animal, an elephant which is almost four metres tall, at its Minworth premises. It will become a permanent street sculpture. Founder Andy Williams said: “Andesign are

trying to constantly define the state-of-the art in large format print and we’ve invested heavily in our 3D printer, so we decided we should reflect that by creating something that is genuinely enormous.” The elephant was produced on the world’s

biggest 3D printer, a Massivit 1800, part of a £500,000 worth of investment made by the Sutton firm. The printer downloads a digital scan of the

precise dimensions of an object and then recreates that object via layer upon layer of a special gel being printed until a whole is formed and hardened. The printed product is then painted in a spray booth to match the original.

Boost for local hospice

A cheque for £4,562 raised by Sutton Coldfield Chamber of Commerce and PLOTT Creative was presented to the Chamber’s chosen charity, John Taylor Hospice. Sutton Chamber

Mr Williams said: “This is a brave new world

for printing and we’re delighted to be at the forefront of it all. “We believe there are no real limits on what

can be achieved and we’re intent on taking as many clients as we possibly can on this fantastic journey with us.”

president Katie Hale presented the cheque to the hospice’s director of Income Generation and Marketing, Joanna Duggan, at a networking event. Ms Hale said:

“Everyone at the Sutton Chamber has been impressed and touched by the work the hospice do in Sutton and we are really keen to continue our association into 2019 including at the forthcoming Sutton, Lichfield and Tamworth Business Awards in January.”
