Sport The Business of Sport Tindall to star at Sportsman’s lunch

Tindall bells: Former England star Mike Tindall

Mike Tindall, rugby World Cup winner and husband of the Queen’s grand-daughter Zara Phillips, is the guest of honour at this year’s Midlands Sportsman’s Luncheon on Wednesday 12 December. It represents another coup for

organisers Eventmasters, the Birmingham-based UK sports hospitality agency – last year Sam Warburton, captain of the British & Irish Lions, provided the inside track on the 2017 tour to New Zealand. Tindall’s take on the current

England side and their chances in the 2019 World Cup in Japan will be particularly fascinating. And no doubt there will be plenty of anecdotes from England’s 2003 victory. Master of ceremonies will be Tim Stimpson, another England international. Since retiring, Tindall has

continued his rugby commitment, back at the grass roots with amateur club Minchinhampton RFC. Tindall, who with Zara, has all sorts of charity commitments, will

Head of sales makes top ten

A key member of the team at the Ricoh Arena has been listed as one of the top 10 professionals in the UK’s conference and exhibitions industry after a record- breaking year. The head of sales at the

Ricoh Arena, Jenni Ford, has been recognised for her work in bringing a record number of events to the venue with a prestigious award win. Jenni led a team that has

sold event space for a record 793 different events in the year leading up to August 2018. As a result, she was

shortlisted for a space on the MIAList at the Meeting Industry Association’s (MIA) awards and can now take her place among the top sales staff in the country after being chosen by judges as a winner. Jenni said: “It is a real

honour to have earned a place on this year’s MIAList. I would like to thank everyone at the Ricoh who has helped make sure that all of these events have run smoothly.”

also present cheques to representatives of LoveBrum, Scotty’s Little Soldiers and The Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham charities, the nominated benefactors of the Eventmasters Charitable Foundation. A series of fundraising activities

have been carried out throughout the year. A silent auction will operate during the event. Eventmasters managing director

Denise Sheasby said: “We are thrilled that Mike has accepted our invitation to be guest of honour. “He is hugely admired across the

rugby world and is sure to provide some amazing insights from his time in the top echelons of the game. “Charity is close to my heart and

Mike’s own fund-raising is particularly praise-worthy. I am delighted that he has agreed to represent the Foundation and make the cheque presentations to the three very worthy causes with whom we have worked.”

Batson cuts ribbon on new shop

Football legend Brendon Batson officially opened a new charity shop – as it starts raising vital funds for a local hospice close to his heart. The former West Bromwich

Albion defender cut the ribbon to Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice’s latest store, which is located in the middle of Bearwood’s busy high street.

‘It’s a fantastic opportunity for us to grow our profile in Sandwell”

Along with staff and volunteers,

Brendon welcomed shoppers from across the community to the launch event, who enjoyed fizz and cupcakes while browsing for bargains. Brendon – who became a patron

of Birmingham St Mary’s last year – is showing his support for the Hospice after doctors and nurses cared for his wife Cecily in 2009. He said: “I’ll never forget the care

and support Birmingham St Mary’s provided to my wife and our family. We were treated with such kindness and dignity and it was a

huge comfort that Cecily could be cared for at home. “It’s heartening to know that the

Hospice is continuing to increase its numbers of shops, as every penny raised goes towards supporting local people and their families during the most difficult of times.” Birmingham St Mary’s new store

in Bearwood is the Hospice’s only shop in Sandwell. All funds raised will go towards providing care and support to people living with life- limiting illness across Birmingham and Sandwell.

Tina Swani, chief executive at Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice, said: “I know we have a lot of Baggies fans in Bearwood, so it was a real honour to welcome Brendon to officially cut the ribbon. “Our new store will not only be a

valuable source of income for the Hospice but it’s a fantastic opportunity for us to grow our profile in Sandwell and hopefully educate more people about the vital services a hospice can provide.” On any given day, Birmingham St Mary’s is caring for 400 people.
