Major milestone for recruiters
A Birmingham-based recruitment specialist that has successfully placed over 40,000 professionals throughout the region is celebrating its 20th anniversary. SF Group,
which has Dragons Den star James Caan as a leading investor, is marking the
milestone with its staff, and also publicly thanking its 12,000 clients and thousands of candidates they have helped throughout this period. Chief executive officer Saira
Demmer (pictured) said: “The number of businesses operating in Birmingham has grown by 29 per cent in the last two decades. We have ourselves seen a year-on-year growth, which is phenomenal when you look at the obstacles businesses have faced in this time but has demonstrated our strength in the market.”
Ten most inspirational Brummies are revealed
John Cadbury, the founder of the famous chocolate maker, actor Dame Julie Walters and activist Malala Yousafzai have been voted as some of the most inspirational Brummies, following a public vote. The vote was organised to
celebrate Birmingham City University’s 175 years at the heart of city life. After more than 1,500 votes from
the public, an initial long-list of 175 ‘Brummies Who Inspire’ was whittled down to 10, with Black Sabbath star Ozzy Osbourne and Duran Duran’s bassist John Taylor making the final list, alongside ‘Lord of the Rings’ author J R R Tolkien. Completing the list of 10 were Olympic gold medallist Denise Lewis, philosopher and chemist Joseph Priestley, poet and writer Benjamin Zephaniah and historian Carl Chinn. The 10 ‘Brummies Who Inspire’
were announced at a special concert at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, where some of the most iconic pieces of music created
by Birmingham artists were performed. One of the ‘Brummies Who
Inspire’, poet and writer Benjamin Zephaniah, said: “When I hear the word Birmingham I feel pride, when I hear the Brummie accent I hear music, and when I see the people of Birmingham I see my family.” Professor Philip Plowden, vice-
chancellor at Birmingham City University, said: “It has been great to see the passion and the debate that this vote has inspired. “These 10 inspirational Birmingham figures come from a variety of professions and walks of life, but are united by their contribution to this astonishing and vibrant city. “Their creativity, dedication and
ingenuity epitomises the spirit of our great city. “At this special concert we
celebrated both the 175-year history of this university as an institution at the heart of our city and those who have made a positive impact on Birmingham life.”
