Minister to address LEP’s annual event
Weld-done: Representatives from Tuffa donating the steel
Donation is a boost for welding students
Students at Burton and South Derbyshire College (BSDC) were delivered a consignment of off-cut plate steel, to help them develop their welding skills. The plate steel off-cuts, piping and tubes
were delivered by equipment manufacturer, Tuffa UK, in time for welding apprentices to start their courses and practice their skills in the college’s welding workshop. Welding course leader Tom Syson said:
“It’s vitally important for our students and apprentices to get practical welding experience as part of their course. “We are extremely grateful for Tuffa UK’s
kind donation of steel off-cuts which will be invaluable for our students practising their welding skills in the workshop.”
Small Business Minister Kelly Tolhurst will be the keynote speaker at the Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire Local Enterprise Partnership annual conference. The event, at Uttoxeter Racecourse on 18
January 2019, will be an opportunity for local businesses to hear first-hand from the Minister responsible for policy areas including small business, consumers and corporate responsibility. Kelly Tolhurst has been MP for Rochester and
Strood since 2015. She was appointed to her current role in the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) in July. LEP chairman David Frost said: “This will also
be a great opportunity to hear the latest thinking from a Government Minister on business issues, and to promote the work of the businesses and organisations driving innovation, skills and economic growth across Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire. “The LEP continues to build on its solid
foundation of successful project delivery throughout the area with exciting ongoing plans to promote growth and help our economy and communities to thrive. “Recent achievements include the completion
of major infrastructure works opening up sites including Four Ashes, South Staffordshire, and
Club remembers the fallen
Burton Albion have not been uprooting many trees this season – but they have gone ahead and planted a very important one instead. The oak tree has been planted at the club’s
Pirelli Stadium, as part of the ‘For Club And Country’ initiative, which will see football clubs all over the country planting trees to serve as living legacies to the hundreds of footballers who served and fell in the First World War. Brewers manager Nigel Clough and chairman
Ben Robinson were on hand to oversee the planting in the build-up to last month’s Remembrance weekend. The tree, along with the commemorative
plaque, has been placed near to the Burton Albion Community Football Centre. Several clubs across the country have planted
trees at their stadiums and training grounds as part of the programme, which is run in partnership with the Woodland Trust and the National Football Museum. Chairman Ben Robinson said: “It is important
that we never forget our armed services and the sacrifices they have made, and this oak tree and plaque at the Pirelli Stadium will be a lasting tribute to those footballers who served in the First World War.”

‘We are investing to create the highly skilled workforce of the future’
“In addition we are investing to create the
highly skilled workforce of the future through our advanced manufacturing and engineering skills hubs at FE colleges. All these initiatives are translating into real benefits in terms of employment and quality of life. “We are very keen to hear the views of our
local businesses so we can continue to maximise the benefits of economic growth for everyone in Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire. The morning will include ample opportunities to put questions and discuss issues with LEP board members, as well as networking with other businesses.”
