Duo honoured by university
Newman University has announced it is making two members of the community honorary graduates. The university has a
tradition of awarding an honorary degree to those it believes have ‘played a crucial part in society’. This year’s recipients are Dr
Noreen Carrocci and actress and writer Rachel Shenton. Dr Carrocci has been
awarded a doctor of education honorary degree for her outstanding contribution as an academic leader. Rachel Shenton, from North
Staffordshire, wrote and starred in the Oscar winning film ‘The Silent Child’, which was about deaf girl. She has been awarded an
honorary degree of doctor of letters for her outstanding contribution as an actress and screenwriter.
Birmingham’s archaic public phone boxes are being removed and replaced by a modern alternative. The old phone boxes will be
replaced by a new service, ‘InLinkUK’, which will include free public wi-fi plus a range of digital services, including local council and community information. The first five of seven InLinks
planned for the city, have been installed in Birmingham city centre, at key locations including Bull Street and Colmore Row. They will provide ultrafast wi-fi
speeds of up to one gigabit per second (1Gbps), and will be the fastest free public wi-fi service in the UK. The InLinks also provide free phone calls to UK landlines and mobiles, rapid mobile device charging, the BT Phone Book app, as well as easy access to charity helplines.
Birmingham is the first Midland
city to get the new service. Each InLink takes over from two
of the old payphones – but they won’t replace the iconic red phone boxes.
‘Residents and visitors are set to benefit from these new services’
Giles Ellerton, BT regional
director for the Midlands, said: “The launch brings the fastest free public wi-fi in the UK to Birmingham’s city centre. Residents and visitors are set to benefit from these new services, where they can make calls for free, access local information and even charge their phone.” The new service is being
provided by InLink Ltd, a joint venture between Primesight and Intersection, in conjunction with BT.

Law team scales new heights for charity
A team of 22 from law firm Gateley has successfully conquered the national three peaks challenge, raising £4,500 for the Birmingham branch of mental health charity, Mind. The team included employees
from across Gateley Plc, Gateley Hamer and Gateley Capitus. Despite challenging weather
conditions and navigating some terrain in the dark, the team were able to complete the challenge safely and in good time. Gateley head of learning Ruth
Heaton said: “This is a fantastic achievement and I’m very proud of the team. It’s not the easiest of challenges and everyone worked together to ensure they were able to reach each summit without any difficulties. “We’re thrilled to have raised
more than £4,000 for Birmingham Mind. They are our charity of the
year, nominated by our employees and the support they provide for people is invaluable. We hope to host more fundraising activities for them in the coming months. “Earlier this year, we launched
our own health and wellbeing network internally. “The network organises
activities to support employees in building personal resilience and maintaining their physical and mental health and wellbeing, giving them the opportunity to participate in exercise and mindfulness sessions, as well as facilitating the training of mental health first aiders.” The Gateley Group has raised
