Will exporting will become more important after Brexit? Exporting has always been important. A lot of manufacturers do rely on global markets and the question then becomes about whether to be located close to those markets or whether to manufacture the products here and ship to the rest of the world. With shipping, particularly to
Europe post-Brexit, there will be some opportunities, as there has been over the past two years due to the fluctuation in the exchange rates. It also depends what’s being exported, if it’s physical goods, then yes there’s clearly still an opportunity. However, for those exporting services, that’s where they’ll start to see more value.
How can the Midlands strength its position as the UK’s manufacturing heartland? We have to get away from the perception and industry stereotype about manufacturing being a dirty place to work and heavily
unionised. If we want to build the future, we’ve got to be agile, global and collaborative to work better together. We’ve got to bring some investment in and the only way to do that is to make the region an attractive place to do business. Embracing technology and being
agile will help to put us in a great position, and the devolved regional Government has the ability to do this.
So, in a nutshell, the region’s
winners will be those who adopt technology and layer it over a standardised business model and ultimately those who embrace disruption as an opportunity, rather than a risk.
