CHAMPIONSHIP SUNDAY BRINGS MIXED RESULTS Senior Hurling Championship St. Fin- barr’s 2-15, Killeagh 2-13
Hurling ship Killeagh
East Cork Junior A Champion- 2-24,
Bride Rovers 1-07 A mixed day for Kil-
leagh’s hurling teams on Sunday last saw us suffer defeat at the hands of St. Finbarr’s in Midleton in the senior hurling champi- onship but gain some sol- ace later the same evening when a team of youth mixed with experience put in a great
performance
to defeat Bride Rovers and qualify for the Junior A Hurling quarter final against Lisgoold.
SENIOR REPORT St. Finbarr’s were the
better team in the senior championship Round 2 match played on pitch-per- fect Clonmult Park, Midle- ton on Sunday afternoon last. They got the score of the game in the second minute when Billy Hen- nessy soloed for 70 metres before
shot past
burying a great Colin Walsh,
and while Killeagh brief- ly led when Kieran Lane hit an excellent point in the 7th
minute, the Barr’s regained that lead within
Killeagh GAA in
until the end. And yet.... Daniel Walsh’s fine goal on 55 minutes, finishing a great move started by Sean Long at corner back and continued by Andrew Walsh on the left wing, left us just one point in arrears, 1-14 to 1-13, and within striking distance. Critical- ly, we were unable to add to this score in the next play, while Barr’s eventu- ally got their second goal which had been threat- ening for some time, and they managed to close the game out, despite Daniel’s second goal coming deep into injury time. Killeagh had excellent performanc- es from Killian Treacy and Gary Leahy in the first half (two points each) and from Andrew Walsh in the second, as he set up mul- tiple attacks by winning clean aerial possession on the left wing, but the wides count – 22 to 5 – gives an indication
of how supe-
rior our opponents were in terms of possession, if not in terms of conversion of scoring opportunities. So Barr’s march on while we now face the dreaded “Slán Leat” round – and think about where we go from here with our senior hurlers. Credit is due to the whole panel who have put in a huge effort in a very frustrating season where Cork’s success left
club
players hanging on week by week, unsure of when they would be required to peak for the next round of championship. Great cred- it is also due to the man- agement team of James
O’Connor, Ray Rochford, Brendan Barry and the many others involved, who have also made trojan ef- forts to prepare this team as well as possible. Beidh lá eile againn! Team:
Colin Walsh,
Cian Fogarty, Christy Coughlan, Sean Long, Pa O’Brien, Kevin Murphy (0-2f), Allen Keniry, Brian Collins, Mikey Fitzgerald, Kieran Lane (0-1), Dan- iel Walsh (2-0), Killian Treacy (0-2), Gary Leahy (0-2), Eoghan Keniry (0-5, 0-4f), Andrew Walsh (0-1).
JUNIOR REPORT Morale was not at
its
highest among supporters as we headed for Ballynoe later the same evening, es- pecially given that our op- ponents Bride Rovers were feeling ecstatic given their senior team’s excellent performance when
they
comprehensively defeated Na Piarsaigh by 2-24 to 0-17 in the senior hurling championship game that followed ours. One straw of comfort
In Green supporters was the unavailability
for the Boys of the
named full-forward Einne Ó hEochaidh for our op- ponents, as he had earlier caused havoc for the Na Piarsaigh defenders in the senior championship game, thereby ruling him- self out of any involve- ment in this particular game. Ryan Prendergast and Conor Barry were the Rovers’ stand out perform- ers, but we had brilliant performances throughout the pitch, with that mix
of youth and experience gelling very well in all ar- eas. Among the Under 21 players, Aaron Walsh was the scorer in chief (from frees and play), aided by Padraig Leahy, David Óg- bebor, Keane Kelly Budds and Kevin Fennelly, while those who might be con- sidered the “more expe- rienced” brigade such as goalkeeper Shane Scully, Padraic Carroll, Tadhg O’Connor (a monster point before half-time was one of the highlights of the game) and Ger Col- lins gave great leadership throughout. This quali- fies us for a quarter final against
Lisgoold and an
opportunity to go further in this competition, which looked most unlikely after our first-round wipeout at the hands of Erins Own. Team:
Shane Scully,
Aidan Morrison, Padraic Carroll, Padraig Delaney, Tadhg Crotty (0-1), Jack O’Rourke, Tadhg O’Con- nor, Jerry Dullea, Keane Kelly Budds (0-3), Aaron Walsh (0-13, 0-7f), David Ógbebor (0-2), Ger Col- lins, Padraig
Leahy (1-
1), Kevin Fennelly (1-3), Dan Landers (0-1). Subs used: Dylan Hogan, Shane Kearney, Fionn McDon- nell, Sean Walsh.
LOTTO REPORT That ‘small car’ prize is
increasing every week as our Lotto jackpot contin- ues to be ‘un-won’, with €7200 now on offer in the next draw. The draw last week, on Tuesday August 7th
won by Tadhg Crotty, Ei- leen
, saw no winner but €30 O’Callaghan, Dick
O’Shea and Lisa O’Con- nell. Numbers drawn were
all even – 12, 16, 28 and 36. You know the story, if you’re not in ….
JUVENILE UPDATE Our minors had a com-
prehensive win over Carri- galine in their final league game last Wednesday – winning by 6-20 to 2-14 – with Darragh O’Connor and Olin Hennessy show- ing up well in the forwards and Robert Sinclair, Dan Lucey and Owen Cosgrove impressing in defence. On Sunday morning our mi- nor panel said goodbye to coach Brendan
Delaney
who flew out later that day to a new life in Al-Ain in the United Arab Emirates. Best wishes Brendan, and thank you for all your great work with the minors over the past few years. Our Under 8’s, 10’s and 12’s had a great day out in Car- low on Sunday last, and we will have a full report on this in next week’s news. Our Under 14 hurlers are in championship action on Wednesday evening Au- gust 15th
away to Lisgoold at 7.30 p.m. Cilliath Abú!
HEALTHY CLUBS PROJECT KILLEAGH GAA - INCH
ROVERS LADIES FOOTBALL - KILLEAGH CAMOGIE - KILLEAGH-ITA’S JUVENILE GAA HEALTHY CLUBS IN ACTION WITH SENIORS On our visit to Clon-
mult Park on Sunday last, we joined forces with our opponents (St. Finbarr’s)
and our hosts (Midleton), who were the original two Healthy Clubs in Cork in 2014, and put on a show- case of all things positive about the Healthy Clubs Project. Twenty in total, three
children
representing the clubs, formed a
guard of honour for the teams and were met by the Lord Mayor Cllr. Mick Finn and Cork County Board chair Tracey Ken- nedy, along with legends Charlie McCarthy and John Fenton. The children representing Killeagh were Daire Crowley, Aoibhinn McGrath,
Alex Fogarty,
Orla Motherway, Adam Barry and Amy Fogar- ty. Flags and banners on display included the Am- ber Flag (mental health), Respect The Water (wa- ter safety), Smoke-Free signage and the Healthy Clubs flags from the three clubs. A half-time obsta- cle course set up by Helen Cusack provided great fun for the children involved and those watching from the sideline. Well done to everyone
involved, with
thanks to Helen, organis- ers Janas Harrington from St. Finbarr’s and Mairead Beausang from Midleton, and especially to Coleman Quirke, Midleton PRO and master of ceremonies for the whole day, whose support enabled this idea to come to fruition.
