He said the focus of the Group was providing the gates to “the elderly and low income families most at risk of flood.” Midleton was the

The Mill Road area was also badly affected, with some ar- eas of the market town under almost three feet of water. Close to forty premises were affected by the floods on Main Street. Post Primary School Transport Scheme a shambles for
students in East Cork Cllr Danielle Twomey
has expressed her anger at Bus Éireann and both the Transport and Education ministers for 20+ families being notified that they have no school transport this year. 20 First year students,
from Killeagh, due to at- tend schools in Midleton this year were notified 2 weeks before they were due to start that they have no seat on the Bus Éire- ann school bus. Of the 20 students al-
most, all their older sib- lings whom have obtained seats in the previous years were also denied seats for

the first time this year. “The situation this year
is dire, the current system is an absolute shamble and is clearly not working. There are over 20 fami- lies now in distress in East cork as to how they will get their children to school. The Scheme is not logical and could never work. If all pupils were to attend school in the post primary centres in their areas the schools would struggle to cope with the capacity. It’s simply not sustainable” Students in Castlemar-
tyr, Ballycotton, Ladys- bridge and surrounding areas have also been af-
fected. With Bus Eireann sending emails to most families on Friday last, while some families are still waiting to hear if their child has got a seat. “The system is not democratic, it is taking the choice away from the parents and children as to where they want to be educated or where they want their children to be educated. If children can- not access their education this year it is a breach of their constitutional right. I have emailed the minis- ter and await his response. He needs to realise
this scheme is not sustainable”
Estate off Dwyer’s Road were affected for the sec- ond time in as many days. The residents, who are no strangers to flooding, were trapped in their houses as the only entrance to the estate was flooded. De- tails for the Midleton Flood Relief Scheme were announced last year but,
however, construction is not expected to begin un- til at least 2021, due to the complex nature of the scheme. The project is examin-
ing both tidal and fluvial flooding, ground water and surface water. This is the first time that all four types of flood risk will be
examined in one scheme. The OPW say they should have a number of options available to consider by March 2019. The Programme of
Works is then expected to
design stage, tender and construction by 2021. It’s believed the final draft
progress to detailed
plan could include perma- nent floodwalls and/ or embankments to manage both tidal and fluvial flood risk. To apply for a Dam
