52 East Cork
Russell Rovers 3-18 St Ita’s 0-14
Russell Rovers, last
year’s defeated finalist, served notice that they will be in the hunt again this year as they were easy winners in this delayed first round of the East Cork Oil Sponsored Jun- ior “A” hurling champion- ship switched to Copperal- ley last Saturday afternoon where they beat a St Ita’s side having to line out without the injured Cork captain Seamus Harnedy. It has been a while since
the opening round draw was made and a long time since the other first round matches back on the 24th of June and it showed in the opening exchanges as both sides looked a little rusty, but it was the men from Shanagarry who dominated the opening five minutes with a score from James Kennefick and two from the excellent Josh
Beausang. The absence of Seam-
ie Harnedy from the St. Ita’s team was always go- ing to be very tough, but to their credit the Pilmore men battled hard in the opening quarter and a point from Cathal Deane and the great prospect that is Daniel Hickey left the minimum between the sides at the end of the opening quarter.
The sides exchanged
two further points before Russell Rovers hit three points over without reply in a three minute spell to extend the lead to four points by the 23rd
min-
ute. Cathal Deane got one back for Ita’s, but the half ended with points from Russell Rovers wing forward Luke Murray and Brian Whelehan, while
in between the battling Darragh O’Brien got one back for the Pilmore men. On the stroke of half time Luke Murray was there again as he had time to pick his spot and score a great goal to leave seven between the sides at the short whistle. The second half was
always going to be a huge challenge for Ita’s who to their credit came out with all guns blazing with three unanswered points, but two Bud Hartnett goals, plus a bag of points from Josh Beausang left Russell Rovers in a commanding position. St Ita’s cause was further weakened by the Red card shown to Ed Coleman and at the finish Russell Rovers were con- vincing winners.
