Castlelyons GAA Niall O’Leary levels the
‘Hill to send us into East Cork U21 “A” HC semi-fi- nal.
Castlelyons 1-13 Watergrasshill
1-13. The Jamsie Kelleher Memo-
rial Park in Dungourney hosted our U21 hurling championship game versus Watergrasshill on Friday evening last with throw in at 7.15 pm. The Dungourney pitch was in in great condition, with a nice stand, etc, and we wish the club well on their fur- ther development as the blocks and fresh mortar were setting on the corner.
a common-sense
Brian Murphy referee was
on the whistle and set the scene for vital game before a good at- tendance. The game was even early on and after a few minutes Keith O’Leary made a great high
catch, parted to Barry
Murphy and he obliged with a well taken point. However, shortly after Pierse Maloney who was causing some us prob- lems in midfield cut in from the wing and planted a great shot in the net to get the ‘Hill off the mark and added 0-3 before Bar- ry Murphy had another point for us. Our shooting could be better, but David Morrison brought us right back in the game with a cracking goal and Keith O’Leary added 0-1 to leave it 1-3 to 1-4 for the ‘Hill on twenty minutes. The game rose a notch with
some great defending on either side as our goalie
John Paul
Murphy was tested a few times but held sound, Conor McCar- thy holding down full back and Niall O’Leary doing mighty in the centre back position.
Of
course, one could not but take note of strong hurling from the ‘Hill full back Aaron Spriggs, with Pierse Moloney going well for them at midfield and Shane O’Regan razor sharp from the placed ball. The’ Hill were go- ing well and up 1-4 to 1-7 when we really hit the problem but- ton as Barry Murphy pulled up with hamstring injury. We all know Barry’s hurling and what a loss to us. However, we held our own again to half time as the ‘Hill had a further 0-1 and Niall O’Leary responded with a rousing 0-1 from play. This left us down a puck of a ball 1-5 to 1-8 at half time. We started the second half
well but were off target and in fact had five wides on the trot in between 0-1 for the Hill and looked in trouble.
However,
Peter Roche moved on a ball sweetly to Jack Kenny who got us off
the mark with a good
0-1, while David Morrison and Keith O’Leary had two more points to leave the minimum now at 1-8 to 1-9. There was some cracking hurling in the game now with great catches, blocks and commitment as the both crowds got behind their teams.
Our full back line and
half backs with Jack Kenny and Ian O’Riordan really help- ing Niall did very well. Shane O’Regan put over a ’65 for the Hill to put them in front but our man Peter Roche put over a great point to level it at 1-10 apiece. We were in added time and massive excitement as
Keith O’Leary put us 0-1 up but the ‘Hill levelled and went ahead 0-1 again. Then with surely the last puck out Niall O’leary was fouled and un- phased from about 70 yards out put over the resultant free and draw the game on 1-13 apiece. This result has put us into the semi final versus Bride Rovers or Youghal as a draw did the business so well-done lads. Team: - John Paul Murphy, Eoin O’Neill, Conor McCarthy, Michael Buckley, Jack Kenny, Niall O’Leary, Ian O’Riordan, Peter Roche, Barry Murphy, Shane Bargery, Keith O’Leary, Jack Ronayne, Andrew O’Neill, David Morrison and Richard Morrison. Subs: - Seamus Morrison, Shane Cotter, Mi- chael Buckley, Seamus McCar- thy and Alex Henley and Mark Spillane. Gutsy show not enough to
halt the Cloyne Brigade in Di- vision 1 Hurling League Castlelyons 0-16 Cloyne
0-19. Our lads were at home to
Cloyne at midday on Sunday in a much-awaited League game. We are now in the business end of the hurling year with the next round of the championship due shortly and the last few games in the league so it’s serious stuff. With Colm Spillane back from county duties, Colm Barry and Anthony Spillane back long- term injury and Declan Varner from the States there was a real buzz in Páirc an tAthair Peadar and the strong crowd knew that Cloyne would test any team. The pitch was good though a bounce to the sliotar and the game was under the watchful eye of referee Mark Murphy. Cloyne ran up an early lead of 0-1 to 0-4 as their corner for- wards were lively and accurate.

Jack Barry our goalie did land a massive 70 yard free for our first score.
Ciarán McGann won a
ball on the forty and set up Eoin Maye for a good score. Ronan O’Regan, 0-1, Ml Spillane, 0-1 (free), and Eoin Maye, 0-2 (one a great assist from Darragh Lawlor) brought us level with 15 minutes on the clock. We then went ahead 0-7 to 0-6 with another from Eoin Maye after a mighty run by Tom Carroll. Paudie O’Sullivan was going well for Cloyne at centre back as was Keith Dennehy at cen- tre forward. The hurling was tough and physical as Ian Cahill and Tom Carroll were having a battle
royal. Darragh Lawlor
had to come off after a receiv- ing a bang in the knee and he was replaced by Ian O’Riordan. We were under serious pressure in the middle in the last
ten
minutes of the first half and a little untidy at the back thus giving away a few frees. Cloyne duly planted 0-3 from frees and 0-1 from play to lead 0-11 to 0-7 at half time. We started the second half
with Colm Barry coming off as he was limping and Colm Spillane coming on at full back. Aidan O’Sullivan had a very good early point for us, but Cloyne recovered with a point from a free. Then a red mist descended on Brian O’Dono- van’s helmet as he received a nasty blow and a Cloyne player walked the line to the red signal from referee Mark Murphy. Despite being a man down it was Cloyne who reorganised as they brought out their cor- ner forwards choking midfield and our half back line. Colm Spillane landed a massive point from his own forty, but we tend- ed to go for the long one rather than leave it in and had a few

wides. Anthony Spillane came in for the last ten minutes and got on the scoring board after good work by Shane Moroney. His brother Colm land anoth- er massive point from way out with Ronan Fenton finding tar- get also. Ciarán McGann came off injured with ten minutes left but Castlelyons fought on hard but could not cut into the Cloyne lead as they picked off a few hand points also. There is
never anything soft from
Cloyne and they dug out a re- sult with craft, good moves and overall deserved their win. We have Kilworth and Wa-
tergrasshill to play in the league and the championship is up shortly. Niall O’Leary should be back as the All-Ireland U21 is listed for 24th
be back from injury.
Rangers 1-12 Our minor team advanced to
August, should But we
now have Alan Fenton, Barry Murphy, Jamie O’Leary, Ciarán McGann. We have a few good lads from the U21 and minor and who knows if we got a run at the championship they could be a mighty help.
All in
all, tough going for our Coach Darren Tobin and selectors mentors Mick Spillane, John McCarthy and Padraig Mur- phy as they set about their work for the championship and await recovery on a few of the lads. Team: - Jack Barry, Brian
Carroll, Colm Barry, Robby Feeney, Tom Carroll, Aidan O’Sullivan, Colm O’Neill, Dar- ragh Lawlor, Eoin Maye, Brian O’Donovan, Ciarán McGann, Ronan Fenton, Michael Spill- ane, Shane Moroney, Ronan O’Regan. Subs: - John Paul Murphy, Colm Spillane, Antho- ny Spillane, Declan Varner and Noel McAuliffe. Minors advance with strong
victory over Nemo Rangers. Castlelyons 3-21 Nemo
the semi-final of the Rebel Óg East Minor B1 Hurling cham- pionship as they had a compre- hensive wine over Nemo Rang- ers in Páirc an tAthair Peadar last Tuesday evening. Fair play to our lads and to the juvenile club, who are working hard, as there is a strong group of good hurlers coming through again with Eoin O’Neill sound in goal, Conor McCarthy strong at full back, Shane Cotter, Leo Doocey and Peter Roche shap- ing up around the middle and the Morrison brothers’ hard workers in attack plus many more. We now play Tracton in the semi-final who defeated St Colman’s in the other semi final on a score 3-11 to 0-14. Hard to judge the form in
this final but Tracton head up the League with eight points from four games where as we have
three points from four
games but conceded our game to Tracton. I see that this game is down for Minane Bridge on Tuesday 14th
inst. What a pity it
is not at neutral venue, but one must appreciate the difficulty in getting venues.
Incidentally
Lisgoold await the winners in the final as they had a compre- hensive 5-16 to 3-8 win over Aghada. Result of our Weekly Lotto

Fitzgerald
and his wife Julie on their new baby girl Fay. County Championship
Draws. Well the
much-awaited
draws were made at Páirc Uí Rinn last evening. There are some cracking games in Round 3 of the PIHC. However, Cas- tlelyons received a bye and are now down to play Courcey Rovers in the Quarter final on a September date. This will be a tough game as we had some mighty battles with Courceys down the years. More on the game later. Imokilly last year’s county
senior hurling champions are now down to play Bishopstown in the next round. We have a strong interest in this as sever- al our players should make the panel. Imokilly are strong but it is the team that counts and no doubt Fergal Condon is working hard in getting his panel ready. Castlelyons Main Sponsor: ZEUS Packaging Group
