Intermediate Hurling Championship -Early Goals Put Mayfield In Command Against St Catherine’s

Mayfield did the damage
early in this third round of the Cork Intermediate hurl- ing championship played in Fitzgerald Park Fermoy on last Friday night. While St Catherine’s had the open- ing two points from a Shane O’Brien free and one from play from Philip Keane, two goals from Patrick Duggan in the 3rd
minute and one
from Shane Duggan in the 4th
minute put Mayfield in
the driving seat. In that opening half St
Catherine’s could do little right and were it not for two brilliant saves from Eoin Da- vis in the Saints goal, this contest could have been over at half time. Instead main- ly through the accuracy of Shane O’Brien from free’s and points from Brian and Mathew Mulcahy along with Rory Galvin, left St Cathe- rine’s trailing 2-11 to 0-10 at the interval, with Nicky Kelly, Shane Duggan, Shane Kelly and Sean O’Donovan in fine scoring form for May-
field. On the resumption St
Catherine’s struck for a goal from half time sub Richard Galvin and a point from Shane O’Brien left just three points between the sides. It was as close as St Catherine’s would get as each time they came close, Mayfield were able to stretch clear as Nicky and Shane Kelly had points, while Eoin Davis also did well to save a third goal at- tempt from Shane Duggan. quarter points for St
Catherine’s but Nicky Kelly with three pointed free’s and Shane Duggan kept May- field at arms-length and with Shane O’Donovan hold- ing Dan Mangan scoreless and Kieran Brosnan, David O’Neill, Gary Lehane and Kevin Punch all playing well, those early goals put May- field on the road to victory and a place in the 4th
round.
