Aghada Gaa Main Sponsor – Irving Oil Abernethy Cup Prem Intermediate Hurling - Aghada – 0-22 v Cloyne 1-22 Thank God for the Ab-
ernethy Cup, it’s a bit of a throwback to the good old days of local clubs playing each other in lo- cal venues. And nothing is more local than Agha- da v Cloyne. The game had everything you’d ex- pect from a local derby. Good hurling, very close game, no quarter asked or given, the obligatory schmozzel, one sent off from each side, and ex- tra time needed to find a winner. Unfortunate- ly Aghada were not the winners, but with cham- pionship coming up, it was great
preparation
for this. Played in Shanagarry
on Tuesday the 7th
Aghada GAA of Au-
gust, Aghada started the better and led 5 points to 1 after 11 minutes, but
slowly Cloyne got
into the game and with 20 minutes played it was a 2 point game, Agha- da 7pts v Cloyne 5pts. At the halftime whistle the sides were level at 9 points each, and Cloyne would have the breeze for the
second half.
Again, Aghada start- ed quicker, points from Pearse O’Neill and Ste- phen O’Keeffe opened up the two point lead again. Before half time Aghada had been dealt a big blow with the loss of Cian Fleming through injury, and again Cloyne now got on top. A point on the 39th
minute was
quickly followed by an important goal on the 41st
minute, which Agha-
da will be disappointed at conceding. From here the sides quickly ex- changed 5 points each in

a matter of 3 minutes as the games switched from one end to the other. But 2 points in the 46th
min-
ute gave Cloyne a 3 point lead as the scores seemed to dry up for Aghada. It was still a 3 point game with just 2 minutes of normal time remaining. But now Aghada rallied. 3 Will Leahy frees and a fine score from Aaron Stafford in response to a Cloyne free, tied the game at the end of nor- mal time. The 1st
period
of extra time remained close. However Agha- da now also lost Pearse O’Neill with an injury, and in the second half of extra time Cloyne were the better outfit. Agha- da did manage a Charlie Terry point, but trailing by two with time almost up, they needed a goal and despite carving out a couple of opportuni- ties, the Cloyne defence stood firm and they held on for the win.

Castlemartyr 4-18 Glen Rovers 2-16 Castlemartyr progressed to
the quarter final of the inter- mediate hurling championship following an impressive victo- ry over Glen Rovers on Sun- day evening in Carrigtwohill. A couple of goals in the third quarter of the game proved to be decisive but everyone involved will be thrilled at the level of performance the team produced throughout. The
game started brightly
for the reds and a goal from Sean Hennessey as well as a point from the sideline by Bri- an Lawton saw Castlemartyr lead by 1-04 to 0-04 after 10 minutes. The Glen kept the match flowing knocking over a few frees to leave the halftime scoreline reading 1-11 to 0-8. The second half started as
quickly as the first with both sides exchanging early points and when the Glen raised a
eastcorkjournal
green flag, the margin was reduced to 4 points at 1-13 to 1-09. With the Castlemar- tyr back line aggressive
in
defense, Darragh Moran was particularly impressive at cen- tre back and scoring chances were difficult to come by for the opposition. When Liam Martin struck a goal from a tight
angle, Barry Lawton
grabbed the game by scruff of the neck and having found Liam in space to set up his goal, he went on to score 2 goals himself and ended the game with an impressive tally of 2-10. The Glen were press- ing hard right up to the final whistle and managed to hit the net again but defensively The Reds stood tall and finished the game strongly. With a full team perfor-
gift option of a YEARLY Club Lotto Ticket.
