sport@eastcorkjournal.ie East Cork Cork Senior Hurling Championship Round 2 Killeagh 2-13 St Finbarr’s 2-15 Killeagh took on St Fin-
barr’s in a winner take all contest in round 2 of the Cork Senior hurling cham- pionship,
at Clonmult Me-
morial Park in Midleton last Sunday afternoon. The East Cork side were very much the underdog coming into this contest having lost to Douglas in the opening round, so they were hoping to pull off a surprise victory. It did not work out for them as St Finbarr’s
with
Damien Calahane, Billy Hennessy and Eoin Keane to the fore, proved too strong in the finish, but only just as it
took a 62nd
from Robert O’Mahony to make sure of the win. Even then Killeagh refused to die and a second goal from Dan- iel walsh left just two points between them in the end. For Killeagh it was a case
of what might have been as they were always playing catch up to a St Finbarr’s side that were wasteful in the extreme, shooting 20 wides
over the hour, to just five for Killeagh who opened the scoring through Kevin Mur- phy. Killian Treacy added a second point from play, be- fore Cork U21 player Billy Hennessy travelled 70 yards to score a goal and put St Finbarr’s ahead. While Eo- ghan Keniry had the sides level, points from Ian Lordan and Glen O’Connor had the Barrs back in front and with Colm Barrett also finding the range, St Finbarrs led by 1-4 to 0-5 after the opening quarter. By half time the lead was
minute goal
increased to four points but it could have been much more as St Finbarrs were waste- ful shooting nine first half wides. Points from Damien Calahane, three
from Ian
Lordan free’s and one from Cian Walsh, helped St Fin- barr’s to a 1-9 to 0-8 interval lead with two Gary Leahy points and one from Kevin Murphy, just about keeping Killeagh in the hunt. It continued to be like for
like in the second half with Andy Walsh and Eoghan Keniry
keeping Killeagh in
touch, while Eoin Keane, Colm Barrett and Robeet O’Mahony kept St Finbarr’s in front. They continued to shoot wide after wide and when Conor Calahane mis- placed a side-line Eoghan Keniry took full advantage. Killeagh then lost a great goal chance
with Daniel
Walsh firing across goal and wide. Had that gone in then Killeagh minght have took off. Instead Ian Lordan pushed St Fuinbarrs 1-13 to 0-12 in front, but Killeagh who missed another chance of a goal through Eoghan Keniry, were right back in the hunt when Daniel Walsh goaled with four minutes remaining. There was just a point between the sides, but Killeagh just could not draw level. Colm Keane hit a vital point for the Barrs, before Robert O’Mahony gave them breathing space with a 62nd
minute goal to push
them five clear. They need- ed it as Killeagh fought to the finish and Daniel Walsh netted again but it was too little too late as St Finbarr’s who dominated possession,
were the better side, but they could have paid dearly had Killeagh taken their goal chances. Killeagh: D Walsh 2-0, E
