Midleton Men’s Shed in Search of New Home
by SEAMUS WHELEHAN
One of East Cork’s
most progressive organ- isations for wellbeing is appealing for help in securing a new build- ing. The newly formed Midleton Men’s Shed are hoping that the business and local community will help secure for them a shed or empty property where they can meet on a regular basis. The group currently meets twice weekly at the
Edmund Rice Centre in Rosary Place.
Howev-
er, the facility is not big enough to cope with the huge demand on its ser- vices.
The men meet
each Tuesday and Friday from 11:30am – 1:30pm where they have shared access to a shed and can- teen, which means few men can work at any one time.
The Catholic Church
have offered the use of a yard on site, but the
Men’s Shed need to pro- vide their own cabin and equipment. Bill O’Leary, Group (Secretary, Mid- leton Men’s Shed) says they have big ideas and big plans and, while they get a lot of support and positive feedback, in re- ality they are homeless. “We meeting only twice a week at the moment but, if we had a shed and key pad, the guys could come in whenever they want. We have enough money to kit it out, but if
we were to pay for a shed that would put a strain on our resources.” Men’s Sheds are
an International Mental
Health Initiative allowing men to share their skills and make new friends, in an effort to tackle is- sues such as loneliness, social isolation and men- tal health issues. Further details can be obtained from Bill O’Leary c/o Edmund Rice Centre Ro- sary Place Midleton
