sport@eastcorkjournal.ie East Cork Premier 1 U21 Hurling Championship - Midleton ease past Shandrum

Midleton 3-19 Shandrum 2-9

Midleton were always in

control of this Premier 1 U21 hurling championship, first round game played in Castletownroche

last

Wednesday evening against a Shandrum team that lined out without the services of

star player Tim O’ Mahony. No doubt he was sore- ly missed, but whether he would have stopped a dom- inant Midleton from win- ning, we will never know. The East Cork side were full value for their win with

Sean O’Leary Hayes, Kevin Finn and Tommy O’Connell running the show. Midleton had three early points on the board but a goal from Shan- drum drew them level early on. By half-time however Midleton were looking the more likely winner, especial- ly when Sean O’Meara did the spade work for Tommy O’Connell to goal and with Cormac Beausang and Kian Farmer adding points to the

tally, Midleton led by 1-12 to 1-0 at the interval. Shandrum again had an

early goal from Conor Grif- fin to half the deficit, but Midleton soon replied with a green flag as Kevin Finn finished the rebound after Eric Moloney had saved well from Tommy O’Connell. With order restored Mid- leton continued to build up their points tally with one Ross O’ Regan effort stand-

ing out. Midleton complet- ed a dominant display with Tommy O’Connell getting in for a third goal to wrap up the win and a place in the second round. Midleton: T O’Connell

Intermediate Football Championship Youghal 1-15

Gabriel Rangers 1-12 Youghal took on Gabri-

el Rangers at the Bandon venue on Saturday evening in the third round of the In- termediate football champi- onship and turned in one of their best displays in years to earn a fantastic victory over their Carberry opponents. Youghal, who were well

organised under Pat Mackey, worked hard for one another and created and took some splendid scores throughout what was always a hugely competitive contest, superb- ly refereed by Alan O’Con- nor from Ballygarvan who

was sensible in the applica- tion of the rules on what was a messy evening for football. Playing with the breeze

in the opening half, Youghal opened their account through Keith McCarthy, but Gabriel Rangers replied with a pointed Eddie Gog- gin free. Mark Cronin had Rangers in front before Ri- chie Cunningham had the sides level for a second time. Ger O’Callaghan had Rang- ers ahead once more but Cunningham drew Youghal level once more, before Paul Moylan had Youghal back in

front. With Gerry Kelly and Andrew Joyce doing well in defence and Nigel Roche flying at midfield, Youghal had a good period coming to the end of the opening quarter with Keith McCar- thy 0-2, Leigh Desmond and Paul Moylan pointing to give Youghal a 0-8 to 0-4 lead af- ter the opening quarter. Gabriel Rangers showed

that they were well able to play as well and in a strong second quarter they added a further four points to just two in

reply for Youghal.

Mark Cronin, Ger O’Cal- laghan, Eddie Goggin and Sean Kelleher were Rangers scorers, but

the the

returning Leigh Desmond and Keith McCarthy had Youghal in front by 0-10 to

0-8 at half time although it took a fine Jack Monaghan save

to deny Ger O’Cal-

laghan a goal. Having played with the breeze in the open- ing half, Youghal still had plenty of work to do in the second half. The improvement shown

by Youghal was evident in the second half as they con- tinued to defend superbly with Damien Kiely, Jona- thon Ormond and Barry Ring doing trojan work while keeper Jack Monaghan con- tinues to impress. At midfield Nigel Roche was immense while David O’Mahony and Alan Frahill O’Connor also stepped up to the mark. Scores were at a premium with each point hard earned with Rangers closing the gap

to a point as eddie Goggin scored. Youghal continued to impress and a well taken goal from James O’Mahony was a big boost. Points from the same player followed and at

Youghal were in a strong position. Gabriel Rangers rallied minute

with a 46th the three quarter mark point

from Mark Cronin and when Jack Monaghan was forced into conceding a penalty, Cronin converted and it was game on again with ten minute remaining. Ger O’Callaghan made it a one point game and in pre- vious years Youghal would have been caught but this team showed resolve

with

Richie Cunningham kicking a point. Paul Moylan then

landed a beauty while Nigel Roche also popped over a crucial point. Eddie Goggin did manage a late point, but Gabriel Rangers needed a goal, but a resolute Youghal defence stood firm and held out for a well deserved vic- tory. Youghal will now face Mitchelstown who got the better of Rockchapel in the 4th

round. Youghal: J O’Mahony
