Russell Rovers 3-18 St Ita’s 0-14

Russell Rovers had a

comprehensive win against St Ita’s from Gortroe in the first round of this year’s championship which was played in wet slippery con- ditions in Copper Alley Youghal.Indeed

Rovers

were up against a St Ita’s side minus Seamus Harne- dy who also went close to winning the Jamesy Kelle- her Cup a few short years ago and Rovers having al- ready tasted the buzz that surrounds East Cork Final day all was to play for. With Rovers having to make a

quick change just before the off when star midfield- er Kieran Walsh had to be replaced due to a knock re- ceived in the warm up.Bri- an Whelehan stepped up to the mark when called to replace Kieran and duly added 2 points from play in a very busy day for him. With Cathal McAllister in charge the game started with Rovers been awarded a free right from the throw in.Up stepped Josh Beau- sang(great to see Josh back from an injury hit season) to do what he does best

and split the posts from the halfway line. Two more points in quick succession from James Kenefick and Josh after some excellent play from Eoghan O’Sul- livan at wing back were to settle Rovers but it was St Itas who were to score the next two points before Josh was to score an excellent point from out on the left wing after 12 mins.Rovers were guilty of an awlful lot of bunching around the half forward line and this seemed to suit Ita’s more as they looked to contain the Rovers Foward attack which is leathal when fir- ing on all cyclinders. With a few strong words from the side line Rovers knocked over some excellent scores from Jack McGrath,Bri- an Whelehan and Luke Murray who received an exccelent pass from Dan- iel Moynihan. This score was to be returned almost

Sept 2018 - J C F C immediately with Luke

supplying Danny for his score after 25 mins and leave Rovers leading by 9 points to 5.Rovers were to receive a further set back when Eoghan O’Sullivan who was having an excel- lent game was replaced by James Aherne due to inju- ry.With Brian Hartnett be- ing well marked all day by Bobby McCarthy he was to produce one marvellous passage of play where he ran at the entire Ita’s de- fence and make the room for a great pass to Luke who still having work to do composed himself to fire a shot to the left corner and give Padraig O’Brien no chance in goal. With the whistle blown for half time after a St Ita’s point Rovers were the happier of the 2 sides leading 1-10 to 0-6. The second half showed no changes to personnell and was a carbon copy of

stronger notably

Kevin Ivers playing out of his skin a lot of ball was been delivered to the half forward line where after 8 mins James Kenefick was to pick out Bud who this time rounded his man to leave the
