Around Kingswear BY MIKE TREVORROW
Rowers at it again! Kingswear Rowing Club has had a
busy season so far this year; since the last report they have enjoyed a very convivial barbecue at the clubhouse on Waterhead Creek where they were pleased to meet new members. June 24th saw the annual Flat Owers Challenge up at Dittisham which took place in ideal conditions where two seine boats battled it out to row from the Higher Ferry up to the far Flat Owers buoy and back. Naturally the rowers needed refreshment and recupera- tion afterwards.
Coastwatch Initiative You could have been forgiven for
thinking that you were in Spain on Wednesday 11th June instead of at the Royal Avenue Gardens. 25º, sunshine and Spanish guitar music in the air. All but for the fact the Coastwatch from Froward Point were running that quintessentially English tradition of afternoon tea at the tea hut to raise funds. All proceeds going to help run the vol- untarily manned lookout nestled up in the cliffs where the Brownstone Battery used to be during WWII. The People of Dartmouth and Kingswear are so generous when it comes to supporting their local charities and a whopping £708 was raised by selling tea, coffees and homemade cakes, all made by the watchkeepers and their supporters. The remote lookout is open 365
days a year looking out over Start Bay and the approach to the River Dart. They are especially vigilant for vulnerable watercraft as well as single handed fishermen. Recently they have started to broadcast local weather bulletins four times a day during the Summer period. This will be especially useful for sailors wanting to know what the visibility is like locally. They are currently looking for
sponsors who may be able to pro- vide a portable information stand for the charity. This is to inform people at a glance about what the chairty does. So if you think you can help, please get in touch! Contact Anthony Purnell at frowardpoint.

Café Culture Just when one café comes along to
enrich our daily grind another hoves (almost) in to view. Remember the teddy bear shop, that hub of vital Kingswear throbbing (!), well it is about to be replaced by another café, one closely linked to an artisan bakery which proposes to serve coffee and cakes. The lady who is masterminding the set-up is mindful not to tread on the toes of the other Kingswear businesses, so we look forward to our further-expanding waist-lines with trepidation. With good bread and cakes on our door- step what can we do?
New Councillor Following the resignation of Cllr Liz
Essex a few weeks ago, Kingswear parish council has co-opted Mr Brian Longland to join the council for the period from now until May 2019 when the next full council elections take place. Brian is well-known in the community as the former very successful chairman of the school’s governing board, during whose tenure the school was supported to grow from strength to strength. The council welcomes Brian aboard and looks forward to working with him over the coming months. Brian is committed to work with other councillors to try to involve the folk up at Hillhead who are part of the ward but who frequently feel more involved in Brixham life than that of Kingswear because of the geo- graphical location of Hillhead and the lack of a formal meetings place at Hillhead itself. Hillhead is part of
the parish of Kingswear/Hillhead of course but sadly rather separated from village life in many ways. It would be so good to see this unhap- py situation improved.
Trees an’ that... Recent decisions made by
Kingswear parish council pave the way for two developments of a very positive nature over on the Hoodown bank of Waterhead Creek. Two former allotment areas, which are no longer used, are to be allotted to a small village fruit orchard and a Ria-Oak nursery to plant and then grow-on these rare oak trees. We are blessed with a good supply of these rare trees in the parish but we would like to be able to spread their areas of growth to ensure their survival. Just look out for David Attenborough and his team once the trees get thriving, we could be famous world-wide! Well maybe. It is hoped to involve the children
at Kingswear Primary school in the planting and care of the trees as a part of their environmental education. The fruit trees will of course become a rich source of fruit picking for future generations of Kingsweardoes. How does Kingswear Damson Gin sound, or perhaps Chateau Hoodown if global warming has an imapct?

Fun Day A number of people have asked whether this event is to happen this year and the answer is no, not this year; the organisers have decided to give both themselves and the sponsors of the event a well-earned rest from the mega-organisation that the event needs. Hopefully, however, there will be another good fun event in 2019 so watch this page for news of that – and start saving your pennies now.
