MEMBERPROFILES:
Name: Bailey Rank: 1st Class Junior Cadet Age: 11 When did you join? Eight months ago. Why? My dad told me it was really good experience for a job as you learn discipline and great life skills. What is the best bit? I really like getting out on the water. Not many people our age get to do all this, it’s great fun. Is it hard work? It can be at times. There is a lot to remember both in the class- room and out on the water. I sometimes find it hard to stay in time with the others when there are four of us out on a canoe. What new things have you learnt? How to march, drill routines and orienteering. I’ve learnt about different military commands and lots about World War One and Two. Favourite sweet: Chocolate éclairs Favourite toy: Yoyo Breakfast choice: Shreddies Top book: Anything about world records
Name: Eden Rank: Senior Cadet Age: 14 What is the best part about the Sea Cadets? Probably the rowing. I’m the coxswain and we enter quite a few competitions, which means a lot of training but it’s fun. We compete all round the South West including Plymouth and Bristol. What job would you like to do? Probably something to do with the Royal Navy. If you are a Senior now, what rank are you working towards? 1st Class Cadet. What else do you do for fun? I play quite a few instruments including the piano and french horn, I sing and I’m in the school orchestra. Favourite TV programme: SAS Who Dares Wins Ideal day out: Shopping in London Favourite subject at school: Music
Name: Sam Rank: Ordinary Cadet Age: 14 Why did you join? There wasn’t anything else going on in Dartmouth that I was interested in so I joined up. That was four years ago. Now I’d like to go into the Royal Marines. My dad was in the army so there is a bit of friendly banter there! What skills have you learnt so far? Leadership, teamwork, how to be organised. For our leader- ship training we have to look after and guide the juniors. What would you still like to do as part of your training? Go on TS Royalist, which is the Sea Cadets tall ship. You get to work on the ship for a week as it travels around Britain. You learn about the ropes, navigation and general sea life. I’d also like to do the shooting course in Scotland. Do you take part in any competitions? We do a district drill compe- tition every February, which includes marching and a free drill display. You can do it armed or non-armed. If it’s armed then we use non- primed rifles but that’s only for the seniors. Favourite subject at school: PE Other hobbies: I play American football. Favourite dinner: Something spicy like a curry. Where would you like to go in the world: Southern Brazil.
