DISCOVERING ETHICAL INVESTMENTS

We are all responsible for looking after our environment and understanding the impact our actions. Some see social responsibility, essentially protecting people, as important as sustainability and protecting the environment.

Are these concerns a luxury that we can’t quite afford when it comes to investments?

The good news is that you could enjoy returns on your investment with a clear conscience if you understand ethical investment.

What is ethical investment? Ethical investment is a broad term for a number of investment strategies. It includes a range of environmentally focused, socially responsible and ecologically sound investments which attempt to balance the morality of a firm’s activities with return on investment.

It is not just about avoiding “sin stocks”, industries that are seen as unethical or harmful, such as tobacco, alcohol and gambling. Ethical investing requires evaluating environmental, social and governance issues, known as ESG.

This could involve analysing a company’s track record on pollution, how socially responsible it is in the community, its commitment to the environment, and welfare of both humans and animals.

There are funds that screen out specific sectors to funds that target positive sectors such as renewable

energy technology, healthcare, or businesses that demonstrate a commitment to the environment and social responsibility. There are also those which aim to use shareholder engagement to improve corporate behaviour and commitment to ethical principles.

Well managed companies, who have a commitment to strong sustainability and good governance, may see a positive impact on performance.

It may also be that companies who embrace ESG are more responsive to changing demands of investors and society in general, and their ethical status reflects a better management approach.

The value of your pensions and investments and the income they produce can fall as well as rise and you may get back less than you invested.

Your home may be at risk if you do not keep up repayments on a mortgage or other loan secured on it. Estate planning is not regulated by the FCA. Past performance is not a guide to future performance.
