Mayflower 400 is the commemoration of the sailing of The Mayflower to the New World, in 1620, an extremely significant event in history for both the United Kingdom and the United States of America. In conjunction with 12 other towns and cities across the UK, Dartmouth Mayflower has a number of ambitious Projects and Events planned during 2020.
D
artmouth is blessed with a magnificent natural asset - a safe haven as a harbour and a truly beautiful river to Totnes and beyond. It is intended to make the very most of this historic legacy with a series of exciting
projects and activities throughout 2020 to commemorate the sailing of the Mayflower to the New World 400 years ago. These will include a series of waterborne activities, both in Dartmouth and upriver at Dittisham and beyond, such as a treasure hunt, raft races, paddle-board, rowing and dinghy races and other events for the young and not-so-young, all appropriately sponsored and supervised.

■ GRAND PAGEANT: The principal maritime com- memorations will open on Saturday 29th August 2020, as the annual Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta closes, with a spectacular parade of vessels led by Matthew (representing ‘Mayflower’) and Brixham trawler, Pilgrim (representing ‘Speedwell’). They will be closely escorted by at least 100 varied ves- sels dressed overall (i.e. with raised pennants and flags) and crews invited to wear appropriate costumes; there will be an accompanying commentary. The procession will sail past a reviewing platform as far as Noss on Dart Marina before returning down river where ‘Mayflower’ and ‘Speedwell’ will moor alongside the Town Jetty. Chairman of the Dartmouth Mayflower 400 Maritime Project team, Robin Shiffner, said “It promises to be a unique and unforgettable event, generously sponsored by Premier Marinas. It will be celebrated with church bells and other suitable musical entertainment and diversions on the Embankment before, during and after the river parade, and followed by an exciting firework display.”
■ ‘MAyFLOWER WEEk’ - 29TH AuGuST - 5TH SEPTEMBER 2020: Throughout the week, as well as continuing waterborne activities, both the Matthew and Pilgrim will be available for charter - for river and / or coastal trips or for receptions alongside, with a fully qualified Captain and crew and a catering team as required. Sail Training Ship Tenacious will also be visiting Dartmouth and, thanks to generous sponsorship from the Dartmouth United Charities Trust, we will be able to sponsor disadvantaged and/or disabled young people for days on board; we hope this will become an annual Mayflower 400 legacy. The week will close on Saturday 5th September with a huge “Son et Lumière” event at the Britannia Royal Naval College, with vessels in the river floodlit and illuminated to add a truly maritime dimension to the spectacular show.

■ VISITS By WARSHIPS, TALL SHIPS, CRuISE SHIPS: We expect warships from the UK, USA and the Netherlands along with Tall Ships and other tradition- al sailing vessels to include visits to Dartmouth in their tight 2020 schedules. Several cruise liners, particularly from the U.S., will be visiting Dartmouth during the year, to join the many land-based Ameri- can tourists tracing their ancestry or connection to the Pilgrims. We also hope that several Yacht Clubs will include Dartmouth in their cruising itinerary for 2020, and the Royal Dart Yacht Club will be arranging racing programmes for them.
