Winged wonders Britain’s butterflies are having a great time as they sun themselves in the endless string of hot, sunny days. You’ll find com- mon butterfly species (small tortoiseshell, peacock and red admiral) on those nectar providing flowers such as lavender, buddleia and ver- bena. Hedgerows with flowering brambles will also attract any number of species includ- ing bright brim- stones and dappled fritillaries.


Moths are also in abundance at the moment - look out for garden tiger moths, silver Y moths and the strikingly bright pink and green ele- phant hawkmoth.

Look out for... The shimmering of large areas of sea close to the shore as shoals of mackerel and other small fish break the surface of the water, often closely followed by seals or fishermen.


Swirling murmurations of up to 20,000 swallows as they migrate or roost in Slapton Ley reedbed. www.southdevonaonb.org.uk
