By locating the Festival in and around the town centre and keeping it free to enter, it means that everyone’s invited. It makes for a much more inclusive event for festival-goers and the town’s business owners too. It also means we are able to make use of the many amazing venues we have in town, including The Flavel, The Guildhall and Community Café in the Old Market Square. HOW DOES THE TOWN BENEFIT? The Festival is widely regarded as being one of the best food festivals in the country and brings over 20,000 visitors to the town each October. Of course, with temporary stalls providing extra retail opportunities, not all businesses in the town enjoy a big surge in sales over the Festival weekend. However, we know that many visitors return to Dartmouth again and again outside the Festival and that this brings longer term benefits for local businesses. WHO ELSE BENEFITS FROM THE FESTIVAL? The Festival supports a number of local community groups and ventures. As part of our commitment to inspire the next generation of chefs, the Festival hosts the local heat of the national Rotary Young Chef competition and an annual Children’s Day - coordinated by Café Alf Resco - which brings together over 250 local school children to enjoy a free day out, packed with hands on cookery demos and activities. The free Children’s Tea Party which follows is always popular too. We love to encourage fledgling

food-related businesses and have established an annual Devon Business Start-Up Award. The award invites applications from new food- related businesses based in Devon and gives winners a substantial helping hand via a prize package that includes a range of marketing

support, business guidance and promotional opportunities. This year’s winner is Pretty Local - an innovative online marketplace for food and drink producers in the South Hams. Local charities may apply for one

of four free charity pitches available over the Festival weekend. Causes that have benefited in the past include Dartmouth Food Bank, Dartmouth Community Orchard and

Manna from Devon Cooking School. Our ever popular wine seminars will again be co-ordinated by Sunday Telegraph wine and drinks columnist Susy Atkins with a great line up of drinks experts including Will Lyons (The Sunday Times) and Fiona Beckett (The Guardian). This year Eat Your Words moves

Friends of Rowcroft. We are keen to do more to support our local community and are continually exploring new ways to do this. We are currently in discussion with local schools and colleges, working with them on new ideas to help and inspire our young people in particular. WHAT CAN WE LOOK FORWARD TO THIS YEAR? This year our Festival Feast takes place a week before the Festival on Saturday October 13th at The Guildhall with JP Bidart of Le Guest Chef taking the culinary reins. The Chefs’ Demo Tent will be packed to the gunnels over the Festival weekend with the usual mix of established names and emerg- ing talent including Mark Hix, Matt Tebbutt, Romy Gill MBE, Jane Baxter, Allister Bishop and of course our Festival Advocate, Mitch Tonks. Learn how to make the perfect cevi-

che, the smoothest chocolate truffles, the finest Moroccan flatbread and much more a workshop organized by

to a new location - a stunning yurt beside the Dartmouth Visitor Centre - and tickets are free. The fun and stimulating events feature in-depth discussions with a host of engaging food experts, writers and innovative chefs who will open your mind to new ideas and fresh challenges from the world of food and drink. Ticketed events will be available to book via dartmouthfoodfestival.com nearer the time. HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED? The Festival happens with the con- tribution from volunteers. Why don’t you join us? Whatever your talents, we can use them. You can volunteer for an hour or the whole three days of the Festival, help at pre-Festival fundraising events or get more involved year-round. Perhaps you can offer extra skills or would like to join the Festival committee? The roles are numerous and fun and range from those that require absolutely no prior experience to those that would suit people with a background in admin, event management, design or sales.
