Snooker in East Cork East Cork Snooker

TOMÁS Singleton

and ‘Singletons Super Valu’ came on board as the main sponsor of last Saturday’s ‘Snooker Marathon’ at

the Cru-

cible snooker club in a hope to raise funds to support

Aaron Hill’s

attempt at winning an ‘International Billiards and Snooker Federation’ (IBSF) World U21 or World U18 snooker title in China in July. The two time Nation- al U16 and U18 snook- er champion along with Youghal’s Ross Bulman will be flying the Irish and Cork flag at the World championships. Present at the ‘Snook-

erthon’ was Cllr Tony Fitzgerald the

Lord

Mayor to lend some sup- port and many of the Cork snooker communi- ty made their way to the Crucible snooker club to support Aaron Hill who in many peoples opinion will be the next profes- sional snooker player to come from Cork follow- ing in the footsteps many moons ago when Antho- ny O’Connor was on the tour.

Definitely snooker has

changed dramatically since then with the or- ganising bodies now in control of tournaments all over Europe and the World and already Hill has tasted success in the EBSA European U18 championships in Po- land a couple of years ago when he reached the semi-finals and recently in Bulgaria he was ex- tremely unlucky not to get to the latter stages of the European champi- onships in Sofia. In snooker you need a

lot of luck at times and Aaron couldn’t buy a pot in Sofia, hopefully when he goes to China that

will change and without a doubt he could write the history books for Cork snooker if he can become the first Cork man to win an EBSA or IBSF event. Stephen Hill said “I

want to thank everyone who supported Aaron, we really appreciate it. China is a really expen- sive trip and we need all the support we can get and people like Tomás Singleton are just

bril-

liant and we I can’t thank him enough and Aar- on really appreciates it. The Hussey family at the Crucible

snooker club

are great to let us use the club and we can with the support of many peo- ple now give Aaron his chance to shine. He will be in Wales the weekend before he leaves to go to China playing for Ire- land against Wales then he flies off to China, so it is all happening for him and with the support of PJ Nolan at RIBSA and his fellow team mates I know he will give it everything. Also at a time when

so much snooker relat- ed tournaments and events all seem to be happening at once there was a fantastic night last Wednesday at Midleton Park Hotel where former World champion Ken Doherty took on the ‘All Ireland Champions’

in

aid of ‘22Q11_Ireland’ which helped raise much needed funds and aware- ness

about this syn-

drome. Ken was in top form and entertained the audience not just with his amazing talent on the snooker table but his wit and humorous anecdotes on household names such as Steve Da- vis, Jimmy White and Ronnie O’Sullivan.

He was up against the

best of the current Irish snooker players from the Under 14 Champion Sean Walsh, U16 and U18 champion Hill of The

Aaron Crucible

Club, Brendan O’Dono- ghue three times Irish Amateur Champion, Jack Newman Fermoy, the Crucible club cham- pions David Cassidy (Cap) Shane Hourihane and Ryan Cronin. After a fantastic season

yet again for the Cru- cible snooker club win- ning the Munster and All Ireland snooker club championships, plus the Singletons Cork snook- er league for the sixth time, it was always going to be a night where the standard was going to be sky high, but Doherty was up to the challenge beating everyone except Brendan O’Donoghue from the

‘New Insti-

tute Snooker Club’ in Nenagh who beat Ken on the night and made a great century in the process. Aaron Hill and Ken

treated the audience to the tactical battle of the re-spotted Black best of three and also in the au- dience were those affect- ed by ‘22q11 Deletion Syndrome’

including

Aine Lawlor, Courtney Leahy-Geasley and the beautiful young Al- ice O’Regan daughter of

well-known artist

and publican Paraic O’Regan. One of Paraic’s paint-

ings ‘Faraway fields aren’t

always greener’

was auctioned on the night and made a tidy sum for the charity. JUST a reminder

that in three days’ time the

‘Munster

Council’ along with Fer- moy CMWS will

Snooker host

the inaugural ‘Munster Finals Weekend’ in Fer- moy through this com- ing Friday, Saturday and Sunday where three Pro- vincial titles are down for decision.

In association with

the weekend sponsors the ‘Wagon Tavern Fer- moy’ owned by Munster Council member Tom Aherne

‘Munster ‘Munster Snooker

Championship’ and the ‘Munster Over 40’s Tro- phy’ are all up for grabs in what will be a fantas- tic weekend of top class Provincial snooker. Chairman of the

Munster Snooker Coun- cil Connie

O’Sullivan

said “This is what Mun- ster snooker is all about. Yes we have the great Munster snooker club championships every year in the Gleneagle Hotel

in Killarney in

January, but there is a long year there and there are so many great play-

ers who with possible the exception of Cork and events in Carlow that weren’t getting any competitive snooker and for years a couple of us wanted a fully operating Munster snooker calen- dar with regular tourna- ment and this year it has all come together beau- tifully at both adult and at underage level with a Munster U18 and U21 this year. The Council has worked very hard this year raising funds, supporting Internation- al players from Munster and this weekend com- ing really is the icing on the cake. We have plans on the run up to Killar- ney of a ‘Munster In- ter-County

Champion-

ship’ which is something that hasn’t happened for years and we will look to have another fund rais- er soon for the 2018/19 season. Snooker is thriv- ing in some places and disintegrating in oth- er places and Munster

snooker tournaments on a regular basis is so im- portant at

for keeping the

alive. I want to thank Tom Aherne for all his support this year, cer- tainly the Wagon Tavern has been very good to us and I also want to thank Fermoy snooker club for hosting the ‘Finals Week- end’.
