Russell Rovers 2-22 Fr O’Neills 3-10
Our hurlers got their Division 3 league cam- paign off to a winning start in Shanagarry last Friday evening when they had 9 points to spare over our near neighbours Fr. O’Neills. It was a lovely sunny evening and with the pitch in excellent condition after the poor Spring weather, both teams served up a good competitive game of hurl- ing.
Rovers opened the scoring with a brace of Jack McGrath points and then proceeded to go on a point-scoring spree
which yielded another dozen, courtesy of Fin- tan Murray (0-2), Kiaran Aherne (0-2), Alan Cott (0-2f), Dan Ruddy (0-2), Brian Whelehan (0-2) and another pair from Jack McGrath to give us a comfortable
lead of 0-14 to 1-2. O’Neills weren’t
(0-2), Alan Cott (0-3), Fintan Murray (0-1) and a sixth point by man-of- the-match Jack McGrath ensured the second half spoils were equally shared between the
sides with
half-time pre-
pared to throw in the towel just yet as they fired over 3 points in as many minutes on the resumption of play with Jack McGrath reply- ing for Rovers. Between the 10th
and 18th minutes
no fewer than four green flags were raised, two for each side with super-sub Sean Gilsenan claiming the Rovers pair which stemmed the

come-back. Further points by Eoin McGrath

After Eoin McGrath scoring in
the first minute with a well-taken point, it was fairly obvious the Cats were not going to pose a serious challenge as we raced into a 2-2 to 0-0 lead by the 9th
minute.
Our first goal came in the 7th
minute when a deliv-
ery from Kevin Moyni- han was fisted home by Brian Hartnett
from the
edge of the small square. Two minutes later Luke Murray billowed the net from close range with Bud supplying the pass just af- ter he had been switched inside to exploit the space

available. It was all one- way traffic from there on with Luke
adding 0-2,
Bud 0-2, Kevin Moyni- han and Kieran Walsh a point apiece to put us well in control at the short whistle, 2-7 to 0-1. It was something simi- lar in the second period, though Catherines did eventually breach our defence with a goal in the 23rd
minute but we
were well out of sight at that stage which enabled our mentors to introduce the full quota of subs. Our second half scorers were: Luke 0-3 (0-2f), Chris Ruddy 0-4f, Eoin McGrath 0-2, Bud 0-1 and James Kennefick 0-1. Dan Ruddy made a few good saves while our de- fence were solid through- out though it must be said they had a relatively easy day at the office. Well done to all in-
volved. This is our second win
in the round robin format (Group 2), having already defeated Ballinacurra on 2nd
April. We now meet
the runner-up of Group 1 in the semi-final which will probably be Glan- mire unless Bride Rovers v Glenville tie ends in a draw.
While it is appreciated
that 11am may not be convenient for some peo- ple to attend the game, nevertheless it was disap- pointing to see so few club people
and supporters
present. Team: Dan Ruddy;
