U21 East Cork A Football County 1st

Round -

Aghada 3-13 v St Michaels 1-6 Our U21 footballers

successfully negotiat- ed the 1st

round of the

County Championship last Saturday night when they had a comprehen- sive victory over St. Mi- chaels from Blackrock. Played in Pairc Ui Rinn an early goal from Cork minor captain, Diarmaid Phelan, helped settled Aghada into the game. St Michaels who were beat- en in the semi-final of the city championship by Douglas, were more than

a match for Aghada in this opening period, and by half time had levelled proceedings at 1-5 apiece. There was nothing in the opening 15 minutes of the 2nd

da were heading

between themselves and Michael’s on the score- board. Aghada continued to play some impressive football and the

half to suggest Agha- for a

convincing win, although the East Cork champions did open up a 3 point lead in this period. Then on 18 minutes Luke O’Connell goaled and this pushed the Aghada team into top gear. With Jordan Tynan outstanding at

back, and Kyle O’Shea impressing also at

centre cor-

ner back, Aghada took complete control. Just as in the East Cork final, Kevin O’Hanlon started to run the show for Agha- da upfront. And with Daniel Creedon popping over some lovely points, Aghada put solid distance

was never in doubt long before O’Hanlon kicked Aghada’s third goal in the dying seconds. This com- petition will probably stall now until after the leaving cert, so it’s likely the end of June before we will play again. Congrats to all in- volved in this great win. Junior A football Championship - Aghada 2-7 v Midleton 2-13 No joy for our 2nd

ever, Midleton kicked for home, scoring 1-4 in this time and with time almost up it was 2-13 v 1-9 in their favour. Ray Savage got Aghada a consolation goal right at

the death, foot-

ball team as our Junior A’s lost out to Midleton in this year’s 1st

round. Played in

Castlemartyr last Thurs- day night, Midleton led from start to finish. At half time they led by 5 points on a 1-5 v 0-3 scoreline. Still a relatively inexpe- rienced Aghada team hung in there,

thanks

mainly to the player on the pitch with no short- age of experience Pearse O’Neill, who dominated the midfield exchanges and kicked 5 points to boot. David Rice and Ben Stafford were also playing well for Aghada. A Ste- phen Daly goal, helped keep Aghada in touch and with 10 to play, it was a 4 point game. Then how-

U12 LEAGUE Castlemartyr 03- 01 Brian Dillons 01-01 Well done to our for-

midable U12s, winning their opening league game on Sunday last. We

welcomed Brian

Dillions to Castlemar- tyr for the opener in the U12 County League. Although the matches are played adhering to Go Game rules, for a lot of our girls it was the first time they played on a larger pitch in more structured match condi- tions. It was a very com- petitive match against an eager Brian Dillons side. We

lead 01-01 to no

score at half time but af- ter the restart our oppo- sition really upped their efforts. Although our de- fense did trojan work to keep Dillons at bay and made several goal line clearances, the

visitors

did draw level 10 min- utes into the second half. But credit

they never panicked and kept working hard all

over the pitch. Their ef- forts were rewarded with a brace of goals shortly before the final whistle to ensure their first league win. Well done to every- one involved on a spirit- ed performance.

CHALLENGE GAMES We made two trips to Aghada last week. First- ly it was our magnifi- cent

U9/10girls, who

travelled on Wednes- day evening. We field- ed 2 teams and played 4 games in total. Both sides were well matched and our girls showed great

spirit and deter-

mination and really en- joyed themselves. They tried out all the new skills they have been learning during training and their coaches were delighted with their efforts. Then it was the turn

of our U11and 12’s to make the trip to Rostel- lan on Thursday evening for their challenge matches, again at

the

kind invitation of Agha- da. We split the squad by age with each playing a match apiece against

both sides and there wasn’t very much to sep- arate them in the end. Every one of our girls gave 100% on the pitch and worked tirelessly until the final whistle. Thanks to everybody for travelling and thanks again to Aghada for the great games.
