Fergal’s, Killeagh, and Inch NS, looked very comfortable

Primary Game, and they contributed hand- somely to Cork’s vic- tory. Colm also got on the scoresheet, making it two points in total for Killeagh-Ita’s juvenile players on the day! • The biggest con-

gratulations go to our new Captain Fantas- tic Seamie Harnedy, who led from the front, from the first minute to the last, for our senior hurlers

as they over-

came Clare in the ‘Big One’. It was a very im- pressive

team perfor- in the

mance and hopes are high that we can follow up with a victory in Thurles against Tip- perary

next Sunday.

(By the way, keep an eye out for Shane Irwin in next week’s Prima- ry Game, following in the footsteps of his dad Damien in wearing the red jersey, and surely not for the last time ei- ther!)

Finally, a big con-

grats to our neigh- bours and friends in Youghal’s South Coast Triathlon Club. After months of long nego- tiations, it was finally announced during the past week that Ireland’s

first ever IRONMAN event will be staged in Youghal and East Cork on June 23rd

2019, with

over 2000 elite athletes arriving to our shores, swimming 3.8 km in Youghal Harbour, cy- cling 180 km around East Cork (including through our parish) and then running a full marathon around the streets of Youghal. We wish South Coast Tri-Club the very best as they prepare for this mammoth undertak- ing, and hopefully our community will come out in force to support this event in every way possible.

Junior Football Championship Last Thursday evening

we took on Aghada in the first round of the Cham- pionship in Castlemartyr and came out victorious by 2-13 to 2-07. We led deservedly at the

break by 1-05 to 0-03 with a well taken penalty by Johnny Comer putting us in control. On the re start a number of quick points looked to have set us up for comfortable win but to their credit they came right back into the game and with less than ten minutes to go there was only two points between us. However

with our

backs now to the wall an excellent move out of our defence resulted in substi-

tute Garan Manley finish- ing the ball to the back of the net and even though they scored a late penalty the final result was never really in doubt. Well done to the players and man- agement on this fine win. Team: Patrick White,

Adam Daly, Luke Dineen, Cathal Gunning, Seamus O’Farrell, Peter Dowl- ing, Niall Walsh,

Fe 21 Football Championship

We played Ballygarvan

last Saturday evening in the County quarter final in Pairc Ui Rinn and came away with a fine win on a scoreline of 4-12 to 2-08. Played in ideal condi-

A blistering start to the second half saw us take a commanding lead with two fine goals from Eoin Moloney and Luke Fin- nerty. Even though they fought back with two late goals of their own, some well taken points from Cormac and Sean sealed the victory for us. Munster Seniorand Minor Hurling Championship Last Sunday afternoon Cork defeated Clare

almost 25,000. Conor Lehane played at

centre forward and scored 1-02. The game was held up for over ten minutes in the second half due to a serious injury to Rob- bie O’Flynn, we wish him well. The minors eventual-

ly overcame Clare also in their first round by 0-26 to 3-13 with a late finish, Christian Murphy played at right corner back and Aaron Mulcahy was an unused sub. Both teams now travel

to Thurles next Sunday to take on Tipperary in round two.

All Ireland Minor Hurling Championship 1928 – 2018 This year marks the 90th

in

round one of the Senior Hurling Championship in Pairc Ui Chaoimh by 2-23 to 1-21 before a crowd of

year of the All Ireland Minor Hurling Champi- onship and the selection of Christian Murphy and Aaron Mulcahy on the Cork panel represents an- other milestone for our club in this competition. Christian and Aaron’s

selection takes the num- ber of Midleton players to wear the Cork minor jer- sey in competitive action (including substitutes) to over 100. The players may not always have been from Midleton (like Christy Ring in 1938) but would have played with the club under the St. Enda’s ban- ner when we combined with other teams. (inaugural winners of the competition, history re- peating itself) and 2018. In another link to the

past, Aaron Mulcahy’s great grandfather was Mi- chael ‘Famous’ Mulcahy who was a prominent member of the Midleton team that won the Coun- ty minor title in 1927. Aaron’s father Barry was an accomplished football- er and played soccer for Cobh Ramblers and Mid- leton, his uncle the great Denis Mulcahy, was a cor- ner stone at corner back for the Midleton and Cork teams of the 1980’s and an Allstar award winner in 1986. He was also

rated as

being their toughest oppo- nent by none other than Jimmy Barry Murphy and Nicky English, two of the greatest forwards in hurl- ing’s history. Christian’s father Ni-

all played juvenile hurl- ing with Glen Rovers and was a fine centre for many years on the Sun- days Well and Midleton Rugby teams, his mother Ber was an accomplished Basketballer and Camogie player. The inaugural All Ire- land minor competition was played in 1928 and as we won the Cork County minor championship in 1927 the club were award- ed the captaincy of the Cork team, a tradition that pertained across all Cork teams for many decades up to recent times when the practice changed.
