Cork Minor Hurlers Point the Way with Splendid Victory Munster Minor Hurling Championship Round 1
Cork 0-26 Clare 3-13
Cork welcomed Clare
in their Munster Minor Hurling championship opener as the curtain rais- er in Pairc Ui Chaoimh last
Sunday afternoon.
The young rebels have a guaranteed four games this season unlike their football counterpart’s as the new Minor hurling championship is struc- tured the same as the Sen- ior one. The Cork starting 15
had five East Cork players in the line up and after a
splendid battle the young rebels emerged winners as Clare were
to 14 players for the last 22 minutes. In that
reduced time
Cork used the extra space well and once Alan Con- nolly had put them in front from a free, they never looked back. Fur- ther points from Paddy O’Flynn, Connolly, Ca- thal Hickey and Daniel Hogan sealed a win that in the early stages looked anything but
the opening two scores for
Clare were two well taken goals from corner forward Mark Rodgers. While Cork had be-
gan well with points from Evan Murphy and Shane Barrett
the Clare ed the feat in the 6th goal
threat soon became evi- dent as Rodgers netted in the 2nd
minute and repeat- min-
ute while William Halpin also added a point. Cork for their part continued to hurl well with Barrett leading the
attack and
while Clare did get points from Fionn Slattery and Kealan Guyler there was little
to choose between certain as
the sides as Cork’s ability to hit the target kept them in touch. Clare although
outplayed still posed a threat and when Gearoid O’Grady slotted a third goal the “Banner boys” were right back in con- tention as they went to the interval leading by 3-7 to 0-14. Cork would have been unhappy with their first half defending, but
the
best method of defence is attack and in the sec- ond half Clare managed just six points. In contrast Cork shot double
that
amount with impressive subs Alan Connolly, Ca- thal Hickey along with full forward Paddy O’Flynn contributing to their tally. The second yellow picked up by Clare wing back
Tony Butler gave Cork the room they needed and in a late surge they got the scores required to gain their opening victory. Like the seniors Cork will now face a Tipperary side also defeated by Limerick, so next weeks games will be vital for Cork. Winning Start For Cork
Cork 2-23 Clare 1-21
Cork and Clare met for
the first time in champi- onship action in Pairc Ui Chaoimh in the opening round of the new look Munster hurling cham- pionship on Sunday af- ternoon. Now played on a league basis with
each county playing four games in a five week pe- riod, victory in the home games would be crucial. For this encounter Cork
gave a championship debut to Sean O’Dono- ghue from Inniscarra and Robbie
O’Flynn from
Erin’s Own while there was a return to action of Damien Calahane in the full back position. Clare came to town with a strong side, one that had defeated Cork in the league so a titanic tussle was expected. It
got a terrific battle, finally settled by an 80th
goal from team captain Seamus Harnedy, which finally got Cork over

with Patrick Horgan, Mark Coleman and Rob- bie O’Flynn slotting over splendid points as Cork led by 0-6 to 0-4 after the opening quarter. By half time just a single point separated them with John Conlon, Peter Duggan and an improving Tony Kelly taking Clare to the ten point mark, while Cork were just in front as Bill cooper, Conor Le- hane, Daragh Fitzgibbon
and Seamus Harnedy all got on the score-sheet for the rebels. The second half sides

responded well
with points from David reidy band john conlon, before Shane O’Donnell placed the ball for Tony Kelly to run through and goal to level the match. It was all still to play for as Cork responded well with Continued on next page
