East and Minister of State at
Fine Gael TD for Cork the Department of Jus-
tice, David Stanton, is en- couraging older people and people living with disabili- ties in Cork East to apply for housing adaptation grants. This follows confirmation that a total of €5,617,405 in funding has been allo- cated to County Cork this year to enable
those eligi-
ble to adapt their homes to improve their mobility and access.
Grants of up to €30,000
are available to assist people with a disability in carrying out necessary works. Older people living in poor hous- ing conditions can avail of grants of up to €8,000 to have necessary repairs or improvements carried out while up to €6,000 is avail- able in mobility aid grants. “The

tion Grant helps people to make changes and adapta- tions to their home to better
cater for their needs, provid- ing further support to old- er people and people with disabilities to remain living independently in their own homes. The grant could be used for a variety of im- provements to the home including making properties wheelchair-accessible, pro- viding an extension, adding ground-floor facilities or in- stalling a stair-lift” said Min- ister Stanton. “The
grants are 80%
funded from the excheq- uer by the Department of Housing, Planning and Lo- cal Government, with 20% funding from the relevant local authority. This year’s programme sees an 11% in- crease in allocated funding from the previous year, with all local authorities set to benefit” confirmed Minister Stanton. “The scheme is all about quality of life

them to stay in their own homes for as long as they wish. I hope to see strong in- terest in the scheme by those who need it and I will be en- couraging eligible constitu- ents to apply for these grants through the local authority.” Those wishing to apply

Calculation
Out of sight where knots are tied And promises are sought and kept, Plans quick-made were not delayed While the weeks of winter wept, And none knew, save us two, Where the victim slept.
What held heart from that wry Tenderness of daily care? Eyes turned blind towards the mind And read no instruction there, What we should, if we would, Seemed to leave our needs nowhere.
Should we leap, from that steep
Where’s the hand will catch us then? There is found, on this ground, Derision in the hearts of men, And to trust, if we must,
Tastes of ashes, smells like dust.
When you need, for human greed, To remove and so to kill,
You must find no common mind With the prey, to work your will, Once give in and call it sin— Then the cup might overfill.
Life goes on, now it’s gone Everything is justified, The mistake we don’t make Is not to put the past aside, For we dare not ruin The living we are doing That risk was not worth Taking for a birth.
