Cork Wary of Tipperary Backlash Sunday 27th
of May in Thurles at 2.00pm Cork Senior and Mi-
nor hurlers will journey to Thurles next Sunday, both seeking second wins in this year’s championship after opening round wins over Clare. Tipperary were de- feated by Limerick in their opening encounter so they will be like a wounded an- imal this Sunday as Cork come into their backyard. Certainly
another loss
would almost certainly rule Tipperary out of the qualifying equation, while a second win would all but secure Cork’s passage to the knockout stages. It is very much all to
play for then as John Mey- ler takes Cork into the lion’s den in what should be a cracking encoun- ter. The injury sustained
by Robbie O’ Flynn will rule him out of Sunday’s encounter with Tim O’ Mahony, Shane Kingston, Dean Brosnan and Brian Lawton the most likely replacement candidates with Kingston perhaps getting the nod. Other- wise it should be an un- changed Cork side that goes into battle against their great
rivals. From
Anthony Nash right up to Patrick Horgan, all of the Cork players had their moments in the win over Clare and a similar work ethic could gain Cork an- other victory over a Tip- perary team that
really
underperformed against Limerick, or did they as Limerick on home turf will be no pushover for
anyone. Limerick who will face
Cork, in two weeks’ time have a free weekend this week so will have an add- ed rest and recovery time than Cork who will have just a six day turnaround. A second win for Cork would leave
work. Perhaps the signifi- cance of a home victory was not lost on them and with Limerick also set for Leeside, any wins or draws garnered on the road would be an added bonus. Elsewhere Waterford,
Tipperary
struggling so on Sunday, expect to see Patrick Bon- ner Maher, James Barry, and Michael Breen and perhaps Seamus Callinan back in the side and along with the likes of Jason Forde, John McGrath and John “Bubbles” O’ Dw- yer, it is certain to be a far stronger Tipperary side on this occasion. Cork can certainly win and on last Sunday they showed a tremendous appetite for
somewhat of an unknown quantity this travel
to Ennis
season will for
the
first of their games, all of which will be away, to face a Clare side needing a victory after the defeat in Cork. Clare should ben- efit from having a match under their belt as a sec- ond loss for them would leave them with a moun- tain to climb even at this early stage. Clare showed against Cork that they are a strong side, particularly
in defence so the Water- ford attack will really need to perform to get a victo- ry, in what is sure to be a cauldron next Sunday. Players such as Stephen
O’Keeffe, Noel Connors, Tadgh De Burca, Austin Gleeson, Kevin Moran, Pauric Mahony and Jamie Barron are all seasoned campaigners and the ven- ue will hardly phase them. More importantly the Wa- terford fans will be look- ing for a positive display in an attack that will be without Stephen Bennett and Maurice Shanahan, but players such as Tom Devine, Patrick Curran and Tommy Ryan may make the step up this year after waiting in the wings. The
team to do duty
won’t be named until later in the week, but one thing is certain, this will be a huge test
for Waterford
who face two further jour- neys to Limerick to take on Tipperary and Limer- ick, before facing Cork in what could be a crucial 4th game for both sides. So far this season in
Munster victory has went to the home side, so it re- mains to be seen if Water- ford and Cork can buck the trend. Home advan- tage will be huge for Clare and if Waterford does come away with a victory, then it would set them up nicely for their double vis- it to Limerick to take on Tipperary and Limerick. A draw cannot be ruled out either and that could
certainly happen. In the Minor Cork will
fancy their chances of obtaining a second win after a good enough dis- play against Clare, who did cause them problems at times, especially in the opening half. The loss of a player certainly helped Cork late on but
they
showed enough compo- sure and team spirit to think that
enough to defeat a Tip- perary side
they are good beaten by
Limerick. Like the sen- iors it is a big opportunity for these young 17 year olds and while Tipperary, who lost to Limerick, last week, will be very strong on home soil, I think that Cork can pick up a second win.
Munster Final Place Up for Grabs in Thurles Senior Football S/F Cork v Tipperary at 7.00pm
Cork football sup- porters will have
to
make the trip to Thurles on this Saturday night for the semi-final clash with Tipperary. Ronan McCarthy’s side saw the premier county defeat
Waterford rather easily last Saturday night, so they will be under no il- lusions that they will be in for a dog fight as Tip- perary will have their eye on the Munster Fi- nal place on offer.
In bygone days, this
would be taken as a given victory for Cork, but not so now as the Tipperary
has risen under Liam Kearns, while
Best of Luck
fortune Cork
have dropped a little in
the overall scheme of things. Still Cork will want to win this one as going through the back door is now a minefield with Mayo and Ty- rone
already destined for that route. For cork
to win however they will need to be at their best and players such as Mark Collins, Luke Connolly, Ian Maguire, John O’Rourke, Colm O’Neill and Tomas Clancy will really need
to play well. Tipperary are strong
throughout the field with Robbie Kiely, Bri- an Fox, Evan Sweeney, Jason Lonergan, Ian Fahy and Michael Quinlivan a match for
the best. If Cork are to win then their attack must
perform, while
the defence must also do its bit if Cork are to have a productive visit to Thurles on Saturday night.
Well Done Everyone
