FOOTBALLERS FALTER AT FIRST FENCE East Cork Junior A Football Championship Carrignavar

0-11, Glenbower Rovers 0-10 A depleted Glenbow-

er Rovers side, short five likely starters for a vari- ety of reasons, fell at the first fence in the Michael O’Connor Motor Fac- tors East Cork Junior A Football Championship First Round game played in Lisgoold on Saturday evening last. Some pas- sages of good play, with a few excellent points, were not enough to eke out a victory, as our nev- er-ending efforts were often undone by a sloppy pass, poor option-taking, or good defending by our opponents. A fifteen minute period before the break, where we

only

scored one point to Car- rig’s four, and ten minutes after the restart where they added two more without reply, were to be our undoing. Prior to this, we had played the better football at times, leading 0-3 points to 0-2 after 13 minutes thanks to a free by Matthew Murphy and two excellent long-range points from Brendan Delaney and Kieran Lane. At half-time, we trailed 0-7 to 0-4 (Cathal Deane’s fisted point after a fine run our only other score) and by 40 minutes it was 0-9 to 0-4 and not looking promising. The fight back was hugely encouraging, as we out- scored our opponents by 0-6 to 0-2 in the closing 20 minutes, but it was just short of what was needed for victory or even extra time. Kieran Lane’s three frees, Matthew kicked one free and one from play, and a Cian Fogarty point from 40 metres re- duced the deficit to just one with three minutes remaining. There were

little opportunities to hit an equalizer in the closing minutes, but they came to nought, meaning Carrig- navar took the spoils on reiteoir Pa O’Driscoll’s final whistle. We play St. Catherine’s in the “Slán Leat” round shortly, so hopefully some of those unavailable for this game will be around to add strength to the panel. Team: Bryan McCar-

thy, Kevin Fennelly, Dar- ragh O’Brien, Jack O’Ro- urke, Mikey Fitzgerald, Philip O’Neill, Allen Keniry, Kieran Lane (0- 4, 0-3f), Keane Kelly Budds, Cathal Deane (0- 1), Brendan Delaney (0- 1), Jerry Dullea, Dermot Motherway, Matthew Murphy (0-3, 0-2f), Kil- lian Treacy. Subs used: Andrew Walsh, Cian Fogarty (0-1), Adrian Galvin, Damien Mat- thews.

SENIOR HURLING UPDATE

Red FM SHL Killeagh 0-6, Glen Rovers 2-20 The morning after

Football Championship probably was not the best time to be playing Glen Rovers in the RedFM Senior Hurling League. But so it was for Killeagh as 8 of the team that played a role in Saturday night’s Football defeat started on Sunday morn- ing in Pairc Ui Chinnei- de. It was disappoint- ing that a performance couldn’t be strung togeth- er but hopefully for the Boys In Green, there will be better days than what there was on Sunday. Of course, one eye will be on championship, when we play St. Finbarr’s in the second round, but our next league outing is on Thursday 31st

JUVENILE NEWS REBEL ÓG

PREMIER 2 FÉ 16 HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP REPLAY Valley Rovers 2-14, Killeagh- Ita’s 1-13 Killeagh-Ita’s and

Valley Rovers met in the replay of the open- ing round of the Fé 16 Premier 2 Carrigaline Court Hurling Champi- onship in Ballinlough on Wednesday 9th

May. The

draw had been a classic, but the replay didn’t quite live up to it. Understand- ably so, as this game was played just as the news of Aoibhe

O’Connor’s

untimely passing reached those in Ballinlough, changing everybody’s perspective immediate- ly. In the circumstances, our team played really well, leading at half-time by 1-8 to 0-4 (there was a very strond wind in our favour), and by 1-12 to 0-8 after 41 minutes. Ci- aran Leahy had been our goalscorer and one of our best players on the night, and while our drawn game heroes Ciaran O’Rourke and Paudie Mackey were well mar- shalled on this occasion, they still battled coura- geously and with some success right throughout the game. George Walsh at full-back and Darragh Coleman at wing-back were other stars on the night, but our tank emp- tied in the final quarter as Valley’s scored 2-6, with just a solitary point in reply from a free. Great effort, next up is Innis- carra in July. For the Jun- ior Cert boys, the books beckon! Panel: Ben Kelly Budds, Colm Treacy,

Subs: Ryan Farquhar, Tony McCarthy, Evan Lane, Remy Bernard, Aaron Fitzgibbon, Rory Lynch, Colm Landers.

MINOR NON- EXAM LEAGUE ROUND-UP Our minor panel have

played two games in the countywide non-exam league. With a depleted panel due to exam play- ers being unavailable, injuries and the unavail- ability of Cork and Im- okilly players, we have been well beaten in both games, by Ballinora in football and by Midleton in hurling. Nevertheless, these games are better exercises than endless training sessions, and with three more each in football and hurling over the next few weeks, there is plenty of opportunity for players to put down a marker in staking a claim for championship starting positions.

- KILLEAGH CAMO- GIE - KILLEAGH-ITA’S JUVENILE GAA HISTORY ON OUR DOORSTEP Castle Richard is a 15th

century castle in excel- lent condition. It would be worth driving a few hours to see it. It’s on our own doorstep, under the care of Don and Pa- tricia Morrison, and it is probably the most spec- tacular Monthly Healthy Clubs Project Walk we have been on in 2 ½ years. The crowd was a little smaller than usual, with holidays and a tri- ple header in Pairc Ui Chaoimh keeping some regulars away, but those who left Woodview on Sunday morning last felt like they had discovered the Lost Ark when we reached our destination. Thanks to Don and Pa- tricia for their welcome and stories of the castle, and for being so gener- ous with their time in the height of busy farm season! Some continued on the journey to near-

4 MILE ROAD RACE THIS THURSDAY The snow put a stop to

our Road Race plans in March, hopefully there will be no last-minute hiccups this week. We go to the start line this Thursday evening at 8.00 p.m., so please come along and support. If you can run, then register in Páirc Ui Chinnéide by 7.30 p.m. (registration will be open from 6.30 or you can pre-register on Tuesday evening between 6.00 and 8.00 p.m. – just €10), or if you would like to come for a leisurely walk, pay your contri- bution and get going by 7.00 p.m. We will have plenty of refreshments, hot showers, changing

facilities and good prizes after the race, and plenty of time for chat and re- flection. See you all there!

Congratulations A great day to be a

Rebel in Páirc Uí Chao- imh last Sunday, and par- ticularly for each of these who deserve our congrat- ulations this week: • Selector Sean Crow-

Olan was very busy in midfield, getting on the scoresheet before half-time, and while Ryan didn’t see game time, he will surely get some ac- tion over the next four weeks as this team strives to build on this opening success • Ryan’s brother Dylan,
