Three Year Contract Confirmed for Ireland’s First Full Ironman in Youghal

Following weeks of
speculation Cork County Council has signed a three- year deal to hold Ireland’s first full Ironman competi- tion. Youghal will be the starting and finishing point for the ultimate endurance challenge 2019, 2020 and 2021 The
inaugural event
takes place on 23 June 2019 and will be a quali- fier for the 2019 Ironman World Championship be- ing held in Kailua Kona Hawaii. Advanced
registration
for the East Cork Ironman opens today, Thursday 24 May with general regis- tration open on Tuesday 5 June. Organisers say the Iron-
man event will attract thousands of elite athletes
and visitors, and will put Youghal and East Cork on the global sporting scene. Ironman Triathlons comprise of a 3.8km swim, 180.25km cycle and 42.2km run. Triathlons are one of
the fastest growing sports in Ireland and the Iron- man brand is known glob- ally, with over 500,000 competing internationally. Mayor of Cork Coun-
ty, Declan Hurley said “Youghal will be centre stage for the next
three
years as we showcase the beautiful beaches, histor- ic towns and world re- nowned hospitality to a worldwide audience.” Declan Byrne CEO of
Ironman Ireland and UK said the key to choosing Youghal for the event is its wide range of accom- modation, international access through Cork Air-
port, road access, space at the venues and the natural resources available, such as its beaches. Events of this nature at-

worth almost €8million annually to the local econ- omy, on top of the global exposure to millions who view the live streaming of these events through the Ironman website.

the Cork diaspora around the world will not let them- selves down in terms of getting people abroad to race back home.” The East Cork Course
