May 2018 Letter by 100+ Cork Doctors on Why They Are Voting Yes We, The Cork Doctors

For Yes, are a collection of medical professionals comprising Doctors from various medical specialties, including General Prac- tice, Obstetrics, Psychiatry and Public Health Medi- cine. We are drawn from a broad demographic spec- trum, varying in age, gen- der, religion and personal background. Some of us are hospital-based, others are based in a community setting, representing both urban and rural General Practice. We are united in our belief that the Amendment

Eighth is harming

many of our patients. It is our duty to advocate for our patients. We are calling for a Yes vote on May 25th

is why. The

management

and this of

pregnancy for women in Ireland involves combined care between GPs and Ob- stetricians. Maternal and Fetal Medicine in Ireland is of a world-class standard. Most of our antenatal pa- tients have a very positive experience of

their preg-

nancy and the professional care they receive. However, we are all too life is compli-

aware that

cated. We know that not all crisis pregnancies can be prevented. Not all wanted

pregnancies will result in a baby capable of life after birth. Not all women can carry a pregnancy to term without putting her health and her life at significant medical risk. As medical professionals

we have first-hand expe- rience of the unique and difficult situations that can arise for a woman and her family as a result of preg- nancy. You have

heard

about these women in the past

number of weeks:

women with significant health problems during pregnancy, or those preg- nancies complicated by fa- tal fetal abnormalities, and women pregnant as a result of incest or rape. These women are our patients. It is because of them that we are involved in advocating for a yes vote. Our duty is to discuss all

options with the woman and her partner, and to give compassionate, supportive and evidenced-based care. What is right for one per- son in a crisis situation may not be right for another. Our role is not to judge or question the patient’s deci- sion. Under the 8th

amend-

ment we cannot fulfill the most

basic requirements

of good clinical practice if our patient decides on or needs a termination of pregnancy.

Some of us

have spoken publicly about the shame we feel that the women and families who need us most have been ex- ported to Britain to access the care they desperately need. May 25th

is not a vote

on introducing abortion to Ireland. Abortion is an every-day reality here, but it is happening in an unreg- ulated, unsupervised and unsupported way. We are extremely concerned about the data which shows that increasing numbers of our patients are buying’ abor- tion pills’ on-line and tak- ing them at home. This is both unregulated and un- safe, and women and girls who take such medications are outside the protective net of our healthcare sys- tem. The status quo is not

acceptable. Our patients who find themselves with a crisis in pregnancy need the best possible healthcare at home in Ireland. The 8th amendment has impeded our care and our practice for a long time. In summary, our deci-

sion to advocate for a Yes vote is informed by evi- dence and experience. For all the women and

families we have been un- able to help in the past, we advocate a Yes vote. For all our future pa-

tients, who want to live in an Ireland where they will be cared for with compas- sion

and understanding,

we advocate a Yes vote. For all our own families

and loved ones, who may at some time in the future encounter some of life’s most difficult situations and may need to rely on the best healthcare Ireland can give them, we advocate a Yes on May 25th

.
